That ticket fell far below the standards expected of our admins and iansdoor is not long out of a previous break from admin.

It is not uncommon for returning admins to have to endure trial again, whether because a headmin deems it necessary or the admin proves it necessary.

My concern with retrialling is always that it would imply an unaddressed training need, and I prefer to see that training neee revisited where the issues at hand involve the basics of adminning.

Else you're hoping an admin that managed to self train out of the basics re-self-trains back into them.
I think this is a good idea - having returning admins becoming Trial Admins is reasonable but I think giving them a specific trainer would help ensure all the bases are covered

Sorry, this is quite a specifically admin post, but I think admins returning as a trial (or demoted) should be given a trainer to supervise them and to make sure they've got all the basics down.

Maybe I’ve read you wrong here but getting all the basics down is basically re-candidate, is that the suggestion?

I think the nuance is that being assigned a trainer has more of an interpersonal thing to it and carries a kind of warmth and guarantee that demoting to AC doesn't carry. Even if they are roughly the same one feels a bit more solid while also being less punitive.

As I thought through this, I failed to find any reason not to try this, the issue more is I expect a demonstrable minimum benefit to a change in order to want to execute it.

My concerns about the effectiveness include the trainer/trainee relationship being rather in its sunset phase by trial admin ; all the real hands on stuff came before this phase, and ideally, by design, the trial admin should be sent off into their 2 month review period without safety wheels on the bike ; this is their chance to act autonomously and prove they can handle it, including knowing when to get support from others beyond their trainer, to mature into a fully "independent" Game Admin rank, one that can theoretically outlast their trainer.

There can be a more personal connection between a trainer and trainee which can also be a benefit throughout an admin's career, but I question if that can be forged by 'assigning' a trainer to someone in the trial-admin phase and whether that bond is formed as a result of the prior training.

I guess if a prior trainer exists and is still active, giving them a heads up doesn't hurt. And extra oversight isn't an issue, but that's something any AT (or any admin really) can undertake anyway if they have any concerns ; this is also part of the point of assigning trial admin status, it kicks off an internal timed process that along the way results in head admins combing through 2+ months of the admin's activity for review.

As such the idea sounds good on the surface, I'm just not sure what it practically entails ; what's the instruction to the trainer - "Go say 'hi' and keep an eye on em?"

I will also note that headmins can effectively do whatever they want in this field anyway, while we have well defined roles and ranks there's nothing that prevents us assigning oversight / courses / whatever nuance we think might help resolve any issues.

If anyone can refine the benefits then please do and I'll probably be on board ; or if either of the other two headmins are particularly on-board with the idea then I wouldn't block it, I'm just not sure what that practically boils down to as an assignment.
