Library DB Review thread

Post by RaveRadbury » #774932

Ezel/ImprovedName has sparked interest in library standards and concerns. This thread is a space for record and discussion of books in the db, mainly in practical nuts and bolts. Confirming that groups of books are duplicates, flagging adult content that is out-of-section, and flagging titles of particular concern.

Heres a collection of books that are duplicates or can be construed as particularly unsavory. As per our messiah Raving rabbid's request, all of these will be hidden, since for MOST of them, I left a small descriptor of what I noticed about the book. Also, I didnt pull full links. I pulled book ID's. therefore, if you want to view a book in a link such as this one.

https://statbus.space/library/book/8887

Replace the last digits with the books ID, and you will get said book!

its not all dead and gloom though, I added a section of books that made me laugh or left me with a thought that are still technically fine to have in the library. we all have opinions though.

also, this is the first section, where I started from high, and got to the 8000 mark. I missed a few im sure, but there are some that are shit, but not BAD. once im passed around the 7000 mark, thats where the books will start to become shittier.

I did this all at work. god im such a good worker. god I love reading while im at work.

IF IT flags me it was for a Nobel cause.

For some reason the statbus library no longer has a search function (the one at the top of the screen is for Ckeys)

This is fixed now. Library has search again. I'll see if I can add it to the global search bar as well.

for anyone individually reviewing these, these are specifically my take on the books. there are some books that are just shit, but its still a book. im just removing some that might be a bit too much.

double post but adding a feature to sort by book category, I.E; Fiction, non-fiction, adult, would be a very nice touch. also being able to separate titles from contents when searching would be QoL

This ones a bit more debatable, so second opinions would be 100 percent needed!

What if instead of filtering the bad books out, let's just keep the stand-outs and wipe the slate clean.

its easier to tell a bad book from a stand-out book IMO. Plus, its particularity subjective on what is a stand out book.

as an example, 10495 is a bad book. Its shit. very little punctuation, misspellings all over the place, talk about goth mommy milker secoffs. Shitty.

YET. it isnt.

this book itself is hilarious because of its bad quality traits. many people are gonna read the first line and say "well this is boring." and put it back. but many others are gonna appreciate the troglodyte that wrote this book. its humorous, direct, short and sweet. Its job is to make you laugh at the clear ineptness of it, knowing that these are thoughts in someones head and not a copypasta. Even though its clearly shit, it truly is still a good book.

On what would be considered a GOOD book would be 12040.
I would have used 12035, as its more cryptic, but It wasnt loading until after I typed what was below. this one still works!
its written with a clear short story in mind, taking us through the day of someone with what seems to be a lover they have. things turn dark as he proceeds to, by implication, drug her and process her into food while she was alive to witness it. Yet instead of fear, its calm. Descriptors of his gentleness thought the day stay even through the gruesome act of cutting up someone while they were alive. ending with an instinctual look to a phone of a worried friend or family member, remarking their disdain for the boyfriend, and that they didnt respond after shopping. and yet, she couldnt respond, because he had no hands. Perhaps that was the last thing she remebered, was the fear that someone else had for her, as she was with the man that she loved, forever.

Amazingly well done! very descriptive, great storytelling, keeps you reeled in, even during the switch up to the quartering and cooking scene. you feel enthralled to read whats going to happen next to the girl, and wonder what will happen during the investigation. though others can say that this book is, in fact shit.

Its too long, too much description and fluff in the middle section as we already have the point if the first quarter, the book dosent end on forever since its cut off,(common occurrence with a lot of books), some people may not understand why he was eating her, they may not look at the underlying themes the books getting at and think that its just using big words to sound smart.

to call a book shit is to really understand both sides of the coin. everyone's going to have another opinion on what book is good and what book is bad. the best we can do is see what everyone comes to as a consensus with a list, while taking the logical approach and flagging duplicates or things that may break the rules if someone read them in a public book reading. thats why even some of the books I mark for deletion say debatable. you need to have some form of doubt in yourself if you are going to cull books.

thats why we filter bad books first. because is easier to see something thats logically not needed (a duplicate or blank book) than to compare the quality of one book to another. hell WGW even had some creative spinoffs that I wouldn't flag for deletion. like the one where all the toys turn to Christianity.

I'm super stoked that Jamarkus is helping out with the books! I downloaded the files Raveradbury uploaded and started going through the books from the first file, "Exact_Duplicate_Clusters_sorted"
It seems that it's all exact matches so it's probably safe to just delete all but the first upload for every book in this file.

Going off titles alone, these books don't have acceptable titles;

Then I went and actually read through many of the books, I still aim to go through the rest, but I only went through about 70 and marked each one I checked on my document. I sorted them by the content, since I wasn't sure how I should go about tagging the books, or if what I deemed should be removed would be controversial or something. I feel bad I didn't kick my ass harder to do this before (though I didn't find out about this thread until like, a week ago), though I guess I can chalk it up to anxiety over how the library's... content, is a very heated and tired topic.
Anyways, once my body stops using me as a punching bag for this month, I'll binge read a whole lot more.

I left smut properly tagged as Adult with no disturbing content alone. (Though I wouldn't object to the purging of that whole category...)

The human harvest one is literally how you create pod people, a race that is still in the game now, and that botanists have access to. This ones fine.

I will add support for editing library categories for admins if it means keeping #3 publicly viewable (or if it'd be useful generally tbh), I think it's soul as hell and would hate to see it hidden.

I think lusty's xenomorph maid is fine, but itd be nice if admins also had the tools to change a books category post-upload, because #3 isn't marked in the adult section
having more categories for books (horror, poetry, shitpost, etc...) would be really awesome too, letting horror get away with more disturbing content (like Shy Hime's very well done books, which I don't think need to be censored but they do give you the heebie jeebies because its very well done horror)

having adult books be hidden away but accessible i feel is the best compromise, also if we can get the ability to switch categories, we can save a lot more of the adult books instead of just "deleting" them (they dont truly get deleted as far as i know)
