Have you folks played Vanderlin? I wanted to hear thoughts on it, it seems interesting.

I've been looking into getting into a medieval-esque SS13 spinoff after Civ13 exploded again.

Ive played it. the controls are convoluted as hell, and the mechanics are layered to hell and back. its also based more on leveling than it is skill, so if you have a higher level in something, you are just better at it than someone else. this includes fighting. interesting, but I dont know HOW I feel about it.

I feel like those servers are overly complicated with the controls as a way of artificial gatekeeping. Also, more often than not I have encountered some of the shittiest, sadistic SS13 players on medieval servers I have maybe one good experience on that codebase in total out of 5 or 6 rounds trying it across a couple servers. I genuinely think it's because newer servers attract the players that have already been banned from every other server for behaving the same way.

I tried a singular round of Vanderlin, I pick beggar, because there are a bunch so I assume it was the assistant equivalent. The king hired me to be a jester and I thought I was in for a good deal and then he had a cage built with a noose "so he had a way out" and locked me in. After the round ended shortly after I went in the Discord and was like "This was my first round on Vanderlin and that was some bullshit" and everyone there basically shit on me for not knowing any of the things in the very sparse Vanderlin wiki, like the fact that playing beggar is tacit permission to be abused, among a couple other jobs, I guess, which is weird as fuck tbh. So needless to say I didn't go back because Monke's players are the goddamn worst.

Kinda been sitting on venting about that experience, but yeah, fuck those guys and fuck Monkestation in general. That server sucks, most the players suck, and the admins suck too. The one thing it has going for it is they keep some of the older stuff that has been removed from /tg/, and port stuff from Goon. Dealing with the admins there makes me appreciate how good our admins are in comparison.

Its not really for me, I don’t enjoy the grimdark servers since they all look kinda terrible to me, and I don’t wanna play as a peasant and farm like all day. If there was a high fantasy server though? You can bet I’d pounce on it

I have a lot of experience on servers like vanderlin, it's not too complicated really, their controls are like bay. afaik you can change the keybinds too so if you want you can do that. Don't let the complicated mechanics and keybinds scare you blackstone-like servers are a lot of fun

I think to sell yourself on it, you should play a round first. If you are a peasant, you can go hunt the werewolf with the guard. The rules don't stop you from doing anything till the point of pure RDM, they are really not strict at all. The quality of roleplay is big range, since there are so many players and no whitelist.
The game is simpler really, there are not many singleplayer jobs.
It also has no deadchat or global OOC during the round, instead, you respawn or leave. Maybe an illusion but it seems to prevent salt and pettiness.

my first round I fell out of a tree and died, my second round I was a very low ranking acolyte of noc god of the moon.
I directed the poor to be fed at the church while the court wizard and I went on a quest for pipeweed and the wizards "sugar" stash, the jester was being tormented by the prince, I watched a heretic get executed before beating a zombie to death with my quarterstaff. the priest and I ventured to the royal court after the king and his son had been murdered by an unknown attacker, a zombie attacked and stabbed me in the heart, I was dragged back to the church sickroom and was saved by the acolyte of pestra. a mob accused the queen of killing her son and husband and attempted to break into the keep, I advised the queen on relations with the church and borrowed weed from the wizard. the king was revived and blame was placed on a hooded dwarf who escaped into the river, knocked his head and likely drowned

and nearly all of the blackstone players got banned so this wont happen anymore

Its still going through the baystation effect, multiple server owners handle it and craft it in their own image.

Roguetown pre blackstone was fun, Rogueworld a brief spin off mode with entirely sandbox elements dropped players into Sargoth, a map with no town but you were expected to build your tent city either on the outside where the Zeds and ambushes from failed pilgrims reanimating were waiting, or make your way to Sargoth keep, a empty decimated fortress with a little area to hold onto and set up in relative peace deciding amongst themselves who was to rule and in charge, while putting to test your crafting skills and knowledge to upkeep the community. It was a fond time.

I tried it, but I feel safe in saying that a solid 30% of the player base sucks, and it drags down the experience (same with regular monkestation funnily enough). I also had a horrible first beggar round where I fell from the starting area I spawned in that I didn't know how to climb down from, broke my legs, got ignored by multiple people, then a soldier looking guy ran up, threw me in a ditch, punched me to near death, then left me there. One kind soul did climb down to the gutter and picked me up, put me in a cart, and took me to the chapel to be healed up. Unfortunately it leans in on that grimdark territory which makes people act like complete dicks because that's realism, or something. Warhammer has been a disaster for non-historical medieval settings in this regard.

It also has the problem of no one wanting to play the town jobs which means 2/3rds of the place are adventurers (skyrim murder hobos) or bandits (which admins have to constantly correct to stop them from killing everyone) so you have 100+ people on, and this huge fuck off town, but half the server are outside the town and one half is holed up in the keep doing the most super serious (and totally not just cringe edgy) roleplay you'd expect if you had a thirteen-year-old watch game of thrones and form their entire view on any medieval setting based off that. Or just unironically followed everything from that one Terrible Writing Advice video:

I will say that I always had pretty helpful people giving me advice in LOOC on how to do things, but there were people who would constantly complain in the endround OOC about people not knowing how to do stuff. To be fair to monke admins, I did see an admin straight up say something to the effect of "dude the only time I see you post in OOC is to bitch and moan about new players, shut up or I'm giving you a mute" so fair on them.

Rogue derisive servers let you heal anywhere by sleeping, its relatively reasonable that it wouldn't be part of their concern to help you other than to direct you to the nearest bucklable bench in order to shut your eyes, but also given your patterns as a new player you're also not blooded, and therefore pretty much static noise to a ongoing resentment of being on the hub to wannabe lifewebbers clique mentality. Beggars pretty much exist to be abused, its not uncommon for them to either hurt themselves deliberately or end up being a intermediary punching bag for other conflicts, given you have depending on your age, and race, varying stats in stealing skill to simply swipe what you need with a middle click from passing people nearby without opening the inventory menu.

I give you props for not downplaying it at any point at least.

Anyways, coming back to this thread, I did like Vanderlin but it's a bit... slow. I played probably 10-15 or so rounds and they last about two and a half to three hours and nothing ever really seems to happen in the town. It's basically the equivalent of playing SS13 if it was a greenshift and 50% of the players were on lavaland or in space exploring, oh, and comms are down, that too.
