Roleplay standards

Post by Vekter » #742993

An issue that I've heard voiced by both LRP and MRP players is that, far too often, they notice players who are either referencing OOC memes like skibidi toilet, using netspeak in-character, or using out-of-character terms like "valid" or "antag" in-character. Admins have historically been allowed to handle issues like this, but the problem seems to be getting worse over time. How do you feel about these issues? If elected, will you further empower admins to handle players who slip into NRP tendencies? Do you have ideas on how we can combat this using tools other than punitive measures?

Yeah I think its a problem. Particularly bad instances that are impossible to defend as being in character should be delt with admistrativly.
For those cases where it is less “ic in occ” and moreso “no effort” I think it may be appropriate to give captains and potentially other heads of staff meta protections/privileges qualified by the fact they put effort and consideration into their communication.

Im going to go right out of the bat and say that when I started playing I believe this issue was a lot worse than what it is now. It may have gotten worse over time depending on how far you go back but in my experience on Terry I believe there is a lot less ooc in ic than what there was 2 years ago. I still feel like it is important to address when and if it comes up but to me it hasnt slipped. As for empowering the admins, I think we have enough power to handle all of this, like a 15 minute ban thats doubled for every past ooc in ic infraction has been a suggested by punishment by headmin terms in the past. A non-punitive measure that could be employed is a hard filter however this can be pretty restrictive and keeping up with all the different flavor of the month memes would not be practical. It's kinda hard to find a carrot to feed to avoid ooc in ic because the issue wont occur if you crack down on it, people do as the people around them do, they mimic behaviours to fit in and adapt, the root of the problem would be people treating the game like a chatroom and influencing the people around them to act in a similar fashion.

It depends, if it's like 'the nukies/cult are gonna win' I don't care but if it's like overly OOC or netspeaky it should go.

If you want to play some vapid space tiktok user at least like sound out the acronyms and such. 'omg' sucks, 'Oh Emm Gee' you know at least works.

Gonna blue sky think here:
It would be cool if players could submit things that they feel are too OOC via an in-game report button that then aggregated all of that into a "buzzwords of the now" in a rolling filter or something like that. Really it comes down to what people are tired of hearing, and what better way to do that than an easy "I hate this" button. Maybe we should regularly poll for what people are tired of hearing.

I’m not a fan of seeing the latest flavour of the month meme whatever it may be; in character. I don’t see myself getting in the way of admins whatsoever for trying to enforce the role-play setting.

The problem is definitely real, although things so bad that they should warrant administrative action are rare in my experience. I think the soft filter is a good tool to address this problem.
I have a confirmed grand total of 1 merged PR. That basically means I'm a c*der now. 8-)

when everyone goes into peanuts already set on what their opinion is ekat's posts are a breath of fresh air
might be more true to say they redirect the dogpile most of the time tbqh, like diving heroically onto a grenade

3. This is a sandbox roleplaying server.
Keep IC out of OOC, and OOC out of IC. Your words and actions ingame should be distinguishable as an in-universe character, and not as a person playing a game.
