Hobbies outside of SS13?

Post by RaveRadbury » #742367

This one gets asked pretty frequently and I've always thought it was a nice relatable thing to share.

Hobbies aside from SS13?

I love cooking, specifically grilling and especially bbq smoking. Outside of that I love boardgames and TTRPGS, my itch io is just filled of them and I think I have about 20 installed at any one time, recently I've also gotten back into magic (specifically commander) and have been playing a bunch with friends over the weekend. I wouldnt really count it as a hobby but I like to read too, just fun and helps with imagination and inspiration. Painting and doodling is also something I do in my off time, mostly on minis but also with pixel art.

I really, really enjoy photography and singing! While it's hardly evident given I'm pretty much a mute from anxiety on the internet, I love to sing and find joy in singing things from filk to pop to punk. Even if I never gather the confidence to sing for a crowd, it's a very worthwhile thing to me, and I absolutely adore it. Photography is just fucking awesome and I love to take photos with the sunset and power/phone lines in 'em, and love to play with lighting and shadows and stuff. There's no better feeling than to catch lightning in a bottle and share the essence of an experience with others— they say that an image is worth a thousand words, but sometimes I'm so fascinated by pictures, it feels as though they're speaking ten thousand to me. Those are the photos I seek, and I love making little attempts even if I'm hardly a professional!

I love bouldering, going somewhere and climbing a big rock gives me a thrill that never gets old tbh, loved climbing since I was a kid but HATED heights.

Indoors, I really enjoy writing terrible poetry, and playing agonisingly long twilight imperium matches with a group of tabletop friends

Outside of the obvious ones, my most interesting interest is theatre! I've started reviewing things and I think I've been getting rather good at it. I can even show you some if you ask.

ProTip! If you email smaller shows and say you'd like to review it they will very likely give you free tickets!

As said prior, I'm really into tabletop roleplaying games and have been my whole life. I've played DnD 3.5, 5e, some OSR system, shadow run, pathfinder 1e and 2e, mothership, and paranoia code red. I'm also a more traditional board game hobbyist.
I'm into 3d printing, both FDM and resin.
I'm politically active.
And of course, I play alot of video games, and I've recently gotten into hobbyist game development.

I'm also a sportshooter and do competitions in 25M (.22lr) pistol. I've also been getting into IPSC.

Videogames(heavy strategy player but also games like Sea Of Thieves and flavor of the week games. Certified Half Life and Valve fanboy.) and programming
Those two combined was actually my first programming experience since I made and maintained plugins for Sven Coop servers(if you've ever played sven coop in the day you might be familiar with Snark Cafe and SnarkSrv/SnarkTime) and CS and CS:S.

Cybersecurity which is also my job.

Being a furry online and offline I suppose?

Aside from that I used to a lot of volunteer work in both community centers and LGBTQIA+ organizations, though that's been a little less lately.

Sometimes I play games that arent ss13 I guess. Cooking is really fun but I do that to live and not really as a hobby. I go snowboarding when I can.

I've got a decent singing voice and in the last few years I've found myself enjoying karaoke more and more. I've done jams with live musicians but I always want to perform esoteric stuff and it's weird to ask hobbyists who learn classic rock charts to play TMBG songs. I also got a hold of a tiny 2 octave MIDI keyboard and I've been trying to finally nail down chords and all that stuff.

I've also picked electronics soldering back up. I bought some hobby kits online and I have been working through those. The goal is to be able to repair retro hardware but using it for prototyping will also be cool, eventually.

After years of "not really feeling it" I finally have a personal game project that has me fired up, and that's been pretty cool because when I showed up here I was pretty burnt out on the idea.
