Ban Details
BYOND account: Thonk
Character name: Kelly Harshman
Ban type: Server
Ban length: 1 day
Ban reason: "As a non-antag assistant, Round removed a non-antag viro for a level 7 virus that viro had no control over. They placed their body in a bodybag and placed out of sight, out of view of being revived. That goes against new escalation policy and is a rule 1 break."
Time ban was placed: 2023-11-22 02:21:27
Server you were playing on when banned: Sybil
Round ID in which ban was placed: 219253
Is the reason/note factually accurate and fair?: No
If no, please provide more details: I was walking around the station when I saw there was a virus going around, one with disfiguration and facial hypertrichosis so when I went to med I checked the virus to go make the cure for it, and I noticed that it was an Advanced disease with the name "Advanced broken face" and because I saw the disease's name like this I assumed it was a player made disease, especially since facial hypertrichosis viruses are usually what a shitter viro would release in an attempt to be "funny." I didn't recall level 7 viruses ever having names before, so after making the cure for myself and some other people I looked to see if the virologist was on sensors. They were in virology on sensors, and when I hacked in I saw him in his biosuit (something which indicated to me that he was trying not to be a victim of his own virus), standing by the pandemic (which I figured meant he was making more grief viruses).
So I killed him (since it seemed to me as though he was griefing and being antagonistic) and brought him to the main hall to leave them buckled to a chair. That was all that I had done to them, somebody ELSE came and did whatever iansdoor claimed I did to them.
at no point did I ever put them in a bodybag or place them out of sight of being revived, somebody else did that.
Not that it would have mattered to me if he was rr'd, since I'd thought he released a grief virus. Escalation has nothing to do with this, especially as I assumed they were acting like or were an antagonist, and thus "Act like an antag get treated like one.
Supporting logs:
scrubby is d, otherwise I'd likely be able to find whoever decided to drag them off last.
Do you disagree with the admin's interpretation of rules or policy?: Yes
Rule 1 is reserved for truly special individuals that cannot grasp playing in good faith, and I do not agree with its overly zealous usage that I see in most ban appeals nowadays.
mistaking somebody for being an antag, and somehow ending up being wrong, isn't being a dick, it's a mistake and it's something that happens in this game, mistakes happen and people make mistakes, it's called being human.
you're not always going to have perfect information in this game, which something I brought up in the ticket only to be told:
"You know assumptions are not good to make and you are free to ask admins if they did a grief virus, i'll tell you if they did and deal with that[...]"
I personally think it's a horrible precedent to set where you have to ahelp to ask if somebody is an antag or not when they are doing things that to you can seem like very real antagonistic actions to your interpretation, especially in a game about paranoia, people can lie and pretend to be innocent and do things stealthily (not every antag ever just runs around with an esword beheading people), I shouldn't have to rely on an admin telling me I have a go-ahead on dealing with someone that I assume has just done something like in this case, just because they aren't covered head-to-toe in syndicate gear.
Do you feel the ban length or decision to note was unjustifiably harsh?: Yes
the ban/note is incorrect on the fact that I never rr'd the viro, at no point did I ever hide them, bodybag or otherwise, (you could've easily figured this out by checking the fingerprints on the bodybag to see who touched it), and since I thought they released a grief virus I considered them to be an antag or at the very least a griefer doing antagonistic things, and so I treated them like one, especially since virologists are a special case, as they are easily capable of making 30 different diseases each with different cures. they don't need to inherently be a traitor to ruin a round, I have seen loads of rounds ruined by non-antag viros deciding to be "funny", and I only found out this guy was innocent AFTER I got PM'd about a half hour+ later.

Howdy howdy.
I'll keep the reply short.
You are free to make bold calls on somebody, being an antagonist based on round information, but you are also responsible for your actions if you turned out to be wrong
A virologist existing in a round at the same time as an event virus causing problems, is not just cause to RR the Virologist
I'll give you both side of the just chat logs and you tell me what that virologist did wrong and how could Winston have done better, so that Kelly would have not murdered the shit out of him?

Re: [Iansdoor] Thonk - Only human...
Kelly did up to -51.9 damage to the virologist:
After which a borg grabbed them and began healing them, up to -26.1 health:
The viro then succumbed while being healed to call Kelly out as bad:
The last time Kelly touched the viro was in the Central Primary Hallway. She took no measures to round-remove them.
Roughly two minutes later the next interaction with the viro is an engineer trying to shake them up in this same Central Primary Hallway.
This engi then brings them to brig medical and strips them, before dragging them back into the hallways:
Where they are then morgued by a different player:

That is excellent logdiving, please do a dissection of my logs above and tell me what Winston and Kelly did and how Winston could have done more to keep Kelly from murdering him on the spot. I'll even throw a treat give you the ahelp logs for you cross reference. as you were bold to post for Kelly.
Edit to clarify the ahelp logs for the non-readers*
Howdy howdy. Why did you RR the viro all together?

usually when I see level 7 virus announcements the virus names are "unknown disease" and i've seen way too many shittery viros releasing facial hypertrichosis fnr that that's what I saw and thought, especially because unless it's something like GBS random viruses are not typically named
thonk ➡ iansdoor
2023-11-22T02:01:22
Well, all I can say is that you jumped the gun on validing them for something they didn't do and round removed them in a bodybag and placed that bag in public bontany.
iansdoor ➡ thonk

Usually, when you see "unknown name" viruses that is caused by walking over gibs and eating dirty food. Any level 7 virus has a name unless it is sentient virus

how was I supposed to know when most viros just sit in their den before releasing shitty viruses? this is the first time I've seen a random with a name like this?

2023-11-22T02:03:18
there's not a lot of room for me to see good in a viro when I see a Named virus (something i'm used to seeing from a player made disease) and it's the typical facial hypertrichosis stuff shitters make, I legitimately couldn't see how it could have been anything but them at the time
thonk ➡ iansdoor
2023-11-22T02:05:39
That is because level 7 viruses are usually wiped out before they have an impact on the shift, via a competent medical staff. I am not sure when that virologist joined the shift, but you removed them and blamed the lvl 7 virus on them. Do you understand that?

2023-11-22T02:05:47
I thought the virus was their doing, (this was the information I figured) am I supposed to know everything about virology when I haven't touched it in like 3-4 years?

2023-11-22T02:06:53
You know assumptions are not good to make and you are free to ask admins if they did a grief virus. I'll tell you if they did and deal with that. But that doesn't give you the right to break into their office and round remove them either under your own misunderstanding.
iansdoor ➡ thonk
2023-11-22T02:08:59
when I saw them they had a biosuit on

is it wrong to that if (since I assumed the virus was theirs) they would wear the suit to avoid getting infected themselves?

2023-11-22T02:09:54
and I shouldn't have to need to ahelp to ask if somebody released a grief virus, that's beyond ridiculous, people can do antagonistic things without flat out going around murdering people with an esword
thonk ➡ iansdoor
2023-11-22T02:11:26
You are in the wrong, They were aware of the level 7 virus themselves while trying to build release their own to combat it. You killed that chance and you should have ahelped to learn new information about department that has changed over the last 3 or 4 years.

2023-11-22T02:13:05
how should I have known they were making a disease to combat it?

2023-11-22T02:15:50
Use words, PDA, not speak of actions to round removing. Which is against the new escalation policy as well. You don't kill, you may crit folks. You could also use any one else in medical to ensure that blame is to be on them. You failed to give them that chance to address it and tunnel vision over the annoucement.
iansdoor ➡ thonk
2023-11-22T02:15:59
do you want me to go "oh mr viro did you release that grief virus?", when this is a social deduction game where they can just lie to save their asses? am I going to have to ahelp to ask if every person I think is doing antagonistic things is an antag?

2023-11-22T02:17:32
Yes. exactly that. Well, I think I am done with the ticket. Please in the future consider using words, or pda them to know if you have a concern.

there's plenty of room to talk when it's any other job on the station but viros have the capability to ruin the round by forcing you to spend all round in medbay making 30 different cures

Re: [Iansdoor] Thonk - Only human...
God bless your log reading, let me piece the chat logs together. Kelly spoke a few lines that round and told the borg "he's dead", "not human", and "released a dumb virus." I don't need your answer to the question I have asked both of them. Please stay out of this appeal.PengisBungholius wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 9:32 amIt may help to refrain from using "murdering" as a descriptor since the viro succumbed while being healed by a borg, as well as the phrase "on the spot" as that is usually used to describe things that happen on the spot, instead of after ~1 minutesinful's logs that he just posted wrote: [2023-11-22 01:36:17.319] ATTACK: Caio029/(Winston Mercado) Has whispered his final words with -20.7 points of health! Re: [Iansdoor] Thonk - Only human...
as far as I can recall level 7 viruses have always been "unknown" diseases, seeing a named virus named like this meant to me that it was player-made.Archie700 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 7:29 am Virus log
The virus came from a random event.
Code: Select all
*logs*
again my understanding was that the disease was theirs as because as I stated before level 7 viruses as far as I can recall are labeled "unknown". had the random virus been just an "unknown" virus like I am used to seeing, this wouldn't have happened, instead it was a named virus with facial disfiguration and hypertrichosis, something VERY typical of the average grief virus.
as for "round-removing" them, you claim I "placed their body in a bodybag and placed (it) out of sight (and) out of view of being revived" when I literally didn't do that, the main body of this ban is that I round removed them by hiding them off somewhere in a bodybag to prevent them being found or revived, when I did no such thing. something you are failing to address here.
and on a second note you have already had an issue with a case of mistaken identity in somebody else's appeal where you banned the wrong person for welderbombing.
somebody else decided to put them in a bodybag and hide them. Not Me.
for starters when he was confronted he never tried to say it wasn't him that released it, instead, he opted for speaking like every other shitter that gets caught, and has their "fun" ruined by valid hunters. had he actually tried to explain that it was a random virus instead of acting like he got caught red-handed, it probably would have actually done him some favors.
► Show Spoiler
irrelevant, my understanding was that (because I thought) they were the one to release the virus, then they were fully valid to lynch. I have seen plenty of grief virus viros get lynched without properly fighting back.Archie700 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 2:10 pm These are the full attack logs between Winston and Kelly starting from pushing.

I don't usually like chatting with people unless I know them or I see them a lot, it's not like I am some mute shitter that prints a cleaver at roundstart and does nothing but kill people, I do plenty of things to contribute to rounds, like making cures for viruses, or fixing holes in the station. the only reason I don't take the mute quirk is because there are still a few people I can enjoy talking to.
this I don't recall seeing, I genuinely missed this.Archie700 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 2:10 pm Viro had also alerted everyone of the virus prior to Kelly going in, per telecomm logs:Code: Select all

that being said as for the note itself to reiterate:
"As a non-antag assistant, Round removed a non-antag viro for a level 7 virus that viro had no control over. They placed their body in a bodybag and placed out of sight, out of view of being revived. That goes against new escalation policy and is a rule 1 break."
whether or not they had antag status had no inherent value in the circumstances to me, because I genuinely thought they were the one that released the virus. I did not round remove the viro like they claimed "by hiding them in a bodybag out of view" as I left them in the hallway in full view of everyone. escalation policy also has no place here, as from what I gathered was that since thought they released the virus they were acting like an antag (which turned out to be wrong call), the majority of this note is an absolute stretch beyond accidentally mistaking a random event virus for the viro's virus. something I had no way of knowing because as far as I have known random viruses are labeled "unknown" even so, the only rule 1 precedent I could find that seems even remotely applicable here is:
Random murders are not acceptable nor is the killing of other players for poor or little reasoning such as ‘My character is insane’. Each unjustified kill is normally met with one 24 hour ban.
with even that being a stretch as
A: it was not random
B: "killing players for poor or little reasoning" lynching a viro over a grief virus you thought they made isn't poor reasoning.
C: "Each unjustified kill is normally met with one 24 hour ban" I have already justified my actions with the things saw IC, if it's poor reasoning for me to see the average facial hypertrichosis grief virus, and I see the viro in a biosuit, acting like I caught them red-handed while they say things like "Asshole." "I'm not robust at all." and "Man I should train.", and I draw a connection between it all, then I have to ask what more do you want? because if simple mistakes like this can lead you to eating a ban, who in their right mind would ever play security?

Re: [Iansdoor] Thonk - Only human...
I am be honest, this is too long of an answer that is all fluff. I am not sure who I am talking to at this point. I will close off the loop here, similar to the one you started in the ahelp.
I am sorry for the blame on the body bag, as stated before, assumptions are bad. But the rest of your actions, you were in the wrong and I will deny taking off the note and ban.
However, I will change the note to..

Is that fair enough? As a non-antag assistant, made a faulty assumption with their past knowledge in virology and err'ed into wordlessly killing a non-antag virologist for a level 7 virus event, that virologist had no control over. While dragging the critted virologist to the medical lobby, told a borg and the crew that virologist was at fault for the lvl 7 virus, efficiently round removing them. This talking action caused the crew carried on for 8 minutes while their dead corpse sat in a chair, only to be stolen away and looted. This is a rule 1 break as the kill and reasoning are invalid. The lack of communication over your in-game concerns are to be addressed in-game chat as this TG is a social community game. Not everyone is a mind reader and you have all the options to communicate with speaking, pda messaging or thru your art.

Re: [Iansdoor] Thonk - Only human...
thanks for the apology at least
this still doesn't really sit well with me... though I feel like I already explained why.
i'd prefer if it said something along the lines of:
i'd really prefer that it was clear that this was a mistake. As a non-antag assistant, mistakenly identified a lvl 7 virus with the name "Advanced Face Breaker" which to them appeared to be identical to a player-made grief virus, believing it to be the virologist's creation they critted them before dragging them to the medical lobby, where they told a borg and the crew that they thought the virologist had made the virus as they were unaware that the virus came from a random event. This carried on for 8 minutes while their dead corpse sat in a chair, only to be stolen away and looted by an unrelated party. Claimed they didn't know random viruses could have names beyond "unknown" This is a rule 1 break as the kill and reasoning are invalid.

Alright, as long as you understand that communication between two spacemen is pretty key. I'll change the note to what you asked to be more of a mistake. But please refrain from rapid escalation to murder, without confirmation.

I can confirm this note was modified, so we'll go ahead and resolve this.
