Not everyone invested in the well-being of animals is a furry! Some people just don't see animals as a lesser form of life, undeserving of consideration for their feelings. Humanocentric attitudes result in not just their suffering, but their needless suffering. Why send cubed monkeys to be slaughtered when your chemistry lab can produce synthmeat or your botanical lab can produce meatwheat, which are both chemically indistinguishable once cooked? Apathy. Because when you reduce these monkeys to, as NT ethicists call them, "simple mobs," it's easy to dismiss the pain they feel as they are butchered, often alive. It's the same anthrochauvinism that permits NT to continue genetics research on the so-called "soulless monkey-humans." To be other, in Nanotrasen, is to be lesser, as reflected in their lax attitudes toward actually addressing the officially forbidden but in practice all-too-common racial discrimination on their stations.
