My only suggestion is making it so you only see someones character description if you click a new "Examine Further" option at the bottom of our current examine list. I don't want to read someones life story every time I check what they are wearing.

Going on bay and looking at someone's backstory is one of the stupidest things I've ever experienced on any SS13 server.

I think people are afraid that we'll slowly turn into bay (and we are slightly leaning more and more towards them) with stuff like no more ERP, no more murderboning, way more admins than ever before breathing down everyone's necks, and porting over features from bay. Thinking we'll eventually become a server where even acting weird and out of character could get you banned (which we really aren't).

i support character backgrounds, gives you a bit of structure to use when you want to act your character out, and lets you be consistent from round to round

Sounds simple enough. I actually thought this was already a thing.

The only issues I see with it is for characters that are special like: the clown, the mime, and some antags.
But for those it could just be hidden/ignored/nulled at round start.

I wanted something like this, but not up to you to decide. Maybe allow the freeform writing but have a check box in your character setup to get random character modifiers you're to abide by like chronic depression or mania. They of course won't allow griefing but light rping with no real consequence should be fine (and also dealt with properly so no bitching when you get arrested for being a psycho or hospitalized constantly for self harm).

I can just see the bitching when people need you to help them greentext and your guy is unable to thanks to some phobia or defect or even moral objection.

And you're going to police that on a server where people regularly have to be banned for calling themself KasuKoam or weekgoku404, and 'luck surname' or 'Windsor Castle' are normal names, and assistants called Leicester Railway and Chang Ling are stalking maint with their stunprod unzipped, the primary method for forcing a shuttle call is to release the singularity, subvert the AI, or both at once, and where hordes of bald greyshirts charge fearlessly to be mulched by the fully-automatic weapons of invading nuke ops just for that push chance? Like you ever need more than one greyshirt to take out the entire nuke squad but I digress

Aside from that, I like it.

As in there are ways to make this not weird to look at.
Making it pretty much optional for everyone to view these as well as write these character descriptions.

The first issue I see is to find a way or place to make people aware of what a good character description will be, as well as let them know it is optional.
And of course the most pressing issue is having to police it in some way or another.

The rules don't have to be stupidly complicated, just add an addendum to the name rules:

1. When describing your character, be concise.
2. No OOC information.

Make backgrounds show up based off of who a person appears to be. Either the background for the person you're disguising as, or nothing for disguising as unknown.

2. This is probably relatively simple compared to a lot of other things, so it's probably not going to take as much effort to properly integrate it with out codebase
