Because you don't have a choice? When you join a game in the official lobby list the host of that game posts a discord link and you join it or you get kicked.
I found this out after the fact but they also had one of the best multiplayer guides for the game.

They don't purge discords belonging to a banned account when bans are placed for harassment, unless your discord was in violation of the rules itself, that I can verify. They also will let you hand your server off to other people, from what I've heard.
