I can't find anything decent to play anymore so I'm taking a trip to the past and started playing the geneforge series. It's actually pretty good for how dated it is and if you can stand dos era graphics, some clunk, and no music it's actually pretty rad so far. Haven't really got far into it yet but I'm having fun.

The NPCs know you because of two previous games. Also because the whole thing is based on a series of novels.

Once you get past that shit and into the world you'll see scenery porn, get good music, combat is (obviously) more dynamic than anything Beth could come up with unless you're a filthy caster spamming quen and axii, even the fucking minigames (gwent and brawling) are decent. Also, if you explore the world you might bump into hopelessly overleveled opponents that you can still beat if you play it reasonably smart.
Which ties directly into my favourite thing about combat: dodging and countering (and deflecting arrows, of course). It helps make the game feel less like TES' "walk up to an asshole, click on him 20 times, he drops, walk up to next asshole".

Story-wise it's 90%. It's in that weird place where the world is really fucking grim, but then you walk into a cave full of farting trolls who sound like they've been voiced by youtubers. Still, it manages to make you feel like your decisions actually matter, and it makes you decide a lot. Feels like half the contracts have an alternate resolution, and probably more of the sidequests.
Money is also scarce if you're maintaining and replacing your equipment (I went from 15k to broke making new sets of witcher gear and upgrading the old) so you have a reason to pick the higher-reward, but prick-ish options.

It’s a good 2-3 hour gimmick game exclusively because of its atmosphere then it drops off when you realize that your “goal” of working towards what happened to the universe isn’t really a goal because all the logs you find on the derelicts don’t actually form a story

The controls adding to the difficulty of the game is kind of the point tho

Ok here's the thing with me and Europa universalis and ck2, maybe you guys can show me how I'm wrong; from what I played, it seems like the game really just wants you to follow history. Like, it seems like there is one good path to take by reenacting the crusades or the discovery of the America's or some other shit while the other choices seem lesser or outright detrimental in comparison, and it just seems kind of railroaded instead of more like "you own this country and can do whatever you want to make it a world power" that I was thinking it would be. How true is this?

There are some advantages to taking things historically, but there is nothing stopping you from deciding that crusades aren't worth your time, the new world is unnecessary and France should really colonize Siberia instead
That is, unless you care about doing things the best way, because historically accurate stuff just works out better, numbers wise, in these games. You'll find it cheaper and often easier to do, with a lot more support in the game mechanics for actual history and a few specific alternate history paths(Such as Byzantium's comeback, holy roman empire reforming, and staying within certain borders)

They also have the AI try to be somewhat historical, and in EU some nations get a bonus to encourage them to become more like they were historically(Only AI though, no player bonus)

So yeah, you can do anything you want. But you'll get rewarded if you stick to the script

half the time france gets fragmented and bordergore ruins everything and suddenly france is ruled by cathars and the byzantine empire is 30 seperate states, I prefer historical accuracy to a complete mess.

I think I'm suffering from vidya midlife crisis. Like despite having quite a lot of time to play, I can't engage with a long story or open ended games anymore.

I've bought all the dlcs for Stellaris, I've played few hours, it was fun, I did enjoy it. But, then, I stopped playing, and I can't bring myself to load the game up and continue.
So I've bought most of the new dlc's for CK2. Because I did play CK2 a lot back in the day, I've finished it at least four times, and have good memories of it (like when my main character died and I woke up being the king of Norway). So I've played few hours, learned the new mechanics, it was fun. And then...I just....that's all.

I've bought Final Fantasy 12, because I never played it. Clocked 6 hours, it was great. But that's that, I don't feel like going back. I've bought Yakuza 0, what a god damn fine game it is, but after 8 hours, pooof.

I don't remember what was the last single player game I've finished. I think it was Hitman 6. Perhaps of its disjointed mission based nature? I'm definitely gonna get Hitman 7, when it's on sale.
But all games I play now are multiplayer. SS13, MTG Arena, Warthunder (that's more of a self flagellation at this point), and Rocket League. And that's it.

Help.

Either get some old stuff you may not have played yet, like the entire final fantasy series(the MMO 14 is practically single player until about halfway through), secret of mana, chrono trigger, old Hitman games, other Yakuza games, and so on. There's almost 30+ years of games out there by now, there has to be something in there that you want to play that you haven't already gone through
Or get some of the extra hard games that are fun to play but will force you to put in a shitload of time to get better at them so you can get to the ending

So I'm now the Augusta and Pontifex Maxima (I have several matrilineal bloodlines) of the restored Roman Empire, control 90% of Europe and Africa, 300k levy, +100gpm income, and It's starting to feel like lategame Stellaris, where nothing can really challenge me any more despite 200 more years are left in the game. I can literally wage war against the rest of the world and still win.

I thought it would be harder to keep such an expansive empire together in ck2, but you snowball all the same. It's disappointing

The hard part is mostly the AI mismanaging their parts of your kingdom, and you can't just own everything yourself
Vassals are tards, but you're essentially forced to use them

And then eventually your ruler dies and the next heir is a lunatic moron, then the vassals all try to fight you

All my vassals love me, I get +10 opinion from bloodlines, +10 for being the roman emperor, +15 for being the religious head, and +20 sex appeal from artifacts, no matter what traits my character gets

Nobody fights me, factions never get larger than 20% of my strength. Every proconsul and commander (And thus almost every imperial elector) in my realm is of my dynasty. Even if my heir of choice did not succeed me, I'm always playing as the roman emperor.

My realm is stable af despite being 3000+ size and 60 direct vassals and has been for the last 100 years. Christianity is destroyed and I just took the remainder of Islam's holy sites. Maybe I'll see if I can't overthrow the Chinese Emperor before the game ends.

I'm a little late to the party with Hearts of Iron 4.
But deposing the Nazis by '37 and turning Germany into a democratic member of the Allies in an effort to "Keep ze peace" in Europe has been fun.
Admittedly it took the Road to 56 mod to flesh it out.

been playing DFO since they did another jumping event and also 95 cap is in a month, im hoping i can get one heblon and one beast piece and maybe partially towards my second for each beforehand so i wont have to grind for too long before starting tayberr's. for the jumps i decided to do a bender and godfather since bender is generally considered the best support aside from the saders (not to mention he was one of my favorite classes in old dfo) and godfather is one of the best synergies available even in the eastern versions, though that makes me worry that they'll be facing some heavy nerfs soon. ill be giving the epics to the bender since im told that luke upgrades are SLIGHTLY better than harlem epics but getting that as well as other things will be on the backburner while i save gold to fund my sader, since he still needs a UmA (which ive been saving LT keys for for when they come back, so hopefully i wont have to drop a huge sum to buy one), one more DI plat, a decent stat/DI pet (though the petit saint will work for now) and a +3 DI/apoc title (which i actually hope doesnt come TOO soon since i still have some christmas titles im hoping to sell in the nearish-to-medium future when the value rises, though thats an inherent gamble), and thats not even mentioning getting amps, which i really REALLY hope i wont have to do to get into tayberr's once i finish (or maybe before?) the heblon and trine sets and would far prefer to do when i actually get tayberr's pieces since those are likely to last a longass time. still need to look into exactly how fiend war/harlem epics/hell grind all meshes together but hopefully i wont have to fuck with it too much.

also thinking of getting back into warframe since i havent played fortuna yet and also didnt realize my favorite frame mesa got primed (on my birthday no less), though that kinda sucks in a way since 1) the pieces are fucking expensive and 2) when i left off i was like 99% complete through forma-ing base mesa and the peacemakers, but grindframe will be grindframe

also also still sucking at cdda. god i hate feral predators.

It released this month. I mean the Shek race are kinda... bony. No scalies sorry.

The devs couldn't implement all "luxury features" they thought of but there are plenty of mods to improve the experience even further.
