There's been a shitload that have been declassified too, so it's hard to blame anyone who doesn't believe the government on anything

The UK and Germany have hidden immigrant crime for decades, US based NGOs have used vaccines to spread birth control in Africa without the population there knowing, and there's literally public notice and protests when a 'global cabal' (Of which there are multiple. Some with conflicting plans and interests, and some more secret than others) meets to discus how to control the world and there's freely available admissions that they try to control things
If you are not at the very least skeptical of a lot of things and demanding proof, you're doing something wrong
If you've demanded proof of the government and none is provided, then you are by all means right to think they are hiding it

Because the alternative is that everything is just happening by incompetence, in which case you would also be right to be pissed at the government and wanting them replaced

"conspiracy theory" is one of those mind-closing phrases that is bandied about precisely because it closes minds.

tarring them with that brush is merely a useful shortcut to preventing people from listening to them, and is usually easier than proving them wrong (sometimes impossible depending on how close to the mark they are)

history is full of conspiracies, and often they are successful.

The japanese knew this and pushed ahead with the attack anyway as they believed the battleships were more important at that stage.

the media is pretty much one entity

not to say that they are all controlled by some shadowy conspiracy (though i wouldn't rule it out personally) but most of their reporters are informed by the same culture, they report on things that are fed to them from a dwindling number of sources, most of them have one of two political biases, and the vast majority is controlled by a tiny number of companies that all have similar interests.

Being self-sufficient is always good
It's nice to trade and everything but if you don't have to trade then you're in a much better position on deals you want to make
You could just walk away, after all. You've got your self-sufficiency so the only things you're losing out on are luxuries you can't make yourself. It's a good goal to have as any group of people or country and a stronger position than being forced to rely on others who may or may not have good intentions

Of course then the other question is whether it is an economically viable goal. Sure, you have coal. But is digging it up, making sure all your power plants can burn it, and cleaning up the environment afterwards worth it compared to other power sources?
For coal, I'm fairly sure the time has passed. But that doesn't mean it's not worth it to take a good look at things every now and then and see if it's worth going with that
