it still boggles my mind that sheltered start gives you a whopping six points for what is basically a huge advantage imo
>free base with good to great-tier loot, a stove with open space around it, a bed, warmth, and a separate z-level so you can play instruments while reading / shoot guns at dangerous enemies you lure inside without every zed within a parsec hearing it and coming for your ass
>free frozen storage by just leaving shit outside until you get a long-term solution

im doing fairly well on my current run, got some leather body armor and im currently in the process of butchering all the local dogs and preserving the meat. holy shit im glad i learned dehydrated is better than smoked (lasts 3 seasons vs SIX FUCKING YEARS), food should be set for a while and since i have the mini pond in my base in the LMOE i should be fine with water for cooking and drinking for the medium or even long term. spitter zeds keep fucking me up, do rubber boots still make you immune to their shit? also, do rubber gloves make it so you can wield conductive weapons and not get shit on by shocker zombies?

I fucked up with the save i was talking about earlier when i decided to go out on a raid when it was raining, so i was wearing a rain hood and forgot my helmet and of course the mob i ran into decided to hit ONLY MY FUCKING HEAD until i died (fucking grabber zombies pulling me out into a horde)

after fucking around with the usual first-day-death characters im doing fairly well again on my new guy, literally the first building i raided (a nearby museum) had a genuine zweihander and not even the platoon of mi-gos that spawned near by base have been able to phase me much, though i nearly got fucked up during a night raid just earlier today when ONCE AGAIN an out-of-view screecher brought a horde of zombies down on me, i was damn lucky to survive as i barely had any hp left on both my legs and my head, a fucking stiff breeze would have broken them. heavily considering not doing night raids anymore due to shit like this, yeah zeds can see me during the day but i can see where they are from much farther which makes it way easier to avoid hordes.

with the loot from said raid though ive gotten tailoring back up to five for leather body armor and i got some books for archery shennanigans so i might try to level that for hunting/chipping zeds as they path to me before finishing them with the sword.

other bits:
-found a working sports car so im debating whether to use it to bust down the walls on a nearby fire station since the metal doors are locked and unbashable, though i'll need a car for the skele juggs that ive spotted
-spitter zeds are FUCKING annoying to fight and butcher/pulp, really wish there was a way to do the latter two without praying to rng that it doesnt fucking spray acid all over you
-even playing with the mod that simplifies guns a little (not the generic one), guns seem hella complicated. might have to read a guide on them, ditto for getting a metalworking industry going (especially since ive yet to find a charcoal smoker and need one to dehydrate meat with ASAP before the meat i've left outside to keep frozen thaws with seasonal change)
-other things i wanna fuck around with but that'd probably wait until if/after i get a semi-decent car working: robot companions, mutations, robot enhancements (though it's arguably harder now since you need an autodoc and no hospital spawned nearby so far as i can tell), weapon mods

Godbrain thinking right there folks, gain melee stats & fuel from commonly disposable enemies that wont rise again. If your combat skills are halfway decent get a wooden weapon and batter the lightning bois to death. Heavy stick works in a pinch, quarterstaff or wood axe are better. You will still get small stuns when they shoot and punch you but it beats getting zapped every time you hit em

Still it was part of the longest run i had for that town, shocker was literally the last one in that corner of the city and id pimped up my collected gear pretty well, it just dodged all my bullets and shocked me to high hell before i could do anything. Only other experience i've really had of them is yelling & drawing them into minefields for a laugh.

In my experience if you're having severe early game troubles, it's just as likely to be a symptom of how you're building your character then how you're playing. Personally, I build for the early game exclusively. "Utility" stuff- mechanics, electronics, first aid- they can all be picked up not easily, but in a risk free manner.

A great beginner build is to take the Traceuse/Traceur background, which gives you Parkour Expert and a bunch of Dodging, then just drop 1 point in Tailoring and all your other skill points into MORE Dodging. Dodging is difficult to raise in game, and having it at such a high value makes you incredibly resillient. Coupled with Parkour Expert, there are very few situations that you cannot get out of- so long as you keep your distance from Shockers!

(seriously something like 80% of my deaths can be blamed on shockers. SUCH BS)

i fixed my food problem for the long term so if history has shown me anything the next house i try to loot will have 5 shocker brutes and a hulk in a closet

furthermore i have been enlightened, i was disassembling rags for thread before but holy fuck disassembling short strings is way quicker and gives way, way more thread. unfortunately though i havent found any sewing kits or whatnot so ill have to craft something for myself to grind up levels

-i want to disarm and use the landmines i found in a house but my trapping level is only 3 and im not risking that shit yet
-i found a randomass anvil so i might actually be able to fuck around with metalworking this run which i've never done before, i need to read up on how to make a rechargeable welding rig since i have batteries and foot cranks and shit. and/or just read up on power in general since ive never gotten to the point where its relevant.
-also need to read up on how to use traps since winter is going out and i bet more critters will start showing up, i want their tasty meat (in a vore way but not sexual)
-i accidentally shaved off the front of my shelter with a tree falling the wrong way
-there's a hospital to the south but im not fucking around with that until i have a basicass car and shit going, even if the mansion i raided early on gave me an awl pike and armor

definitely the farthest i've ever gotten, i finished making a welding and forge rig and now im working through getting the tools and shit i need to make my car, which im getting parts for from the swat truck in the town nearby. kind of a pain to lug all the parts around and straining myself constantly but hopefully it'l be worth it once i get all the pieces in place. need to figure out exactly how to make my rigs rechargeable too, i have a general idea but ill need to check the wiki or something most likely.

Ok so one of the scientists in the lab had a sensory dulling bionic amd there was an autodoc in there so i am now a BIONIC GOD from dissecting scientists and bionic commados with a scalpel. But then i got the autonomous surgical scalpel bionic so i dropped it. Update to the latest experimental if you really want to deal with the tedium of having to pause ti shit and piss if you dont want your entire outfit getting the filthy penalty and a massive mood debuff. Its rate of buildup unless you have the bionic is based on the amount of food and water In your stomach. It creates a "human waste" item that can attract giant bugs after a while so its best to burn it. You can eat it but it makes you sick and debuffs. Also if you have the flu or intestinal parasites it just covers the tile in diarrhea like boomer bile but browner.
