System telling you where you can place items
Sorry for the name, couldn't find a PR for an official name and changelog is basically that.
Anyways this is pretty annoying and I don't like it, and I don't think others do either. Rest of my opinion is up to the vote.

oh you mean the inventory system
how in anyway is that bad? It literally helps you with information

Re: System telling you where you can place items
Its kind of annoying. Its not something huge but honestly I don't get whats wrong with just clicking to see if it can go there? Keeps making me think I already placed the item.oranges wrote:oh you mean the inventory system

What's the point though? It's just visual and code clutter.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
What information? It makes it hard to tell when your item has actually switched to the slot, which mid combat is fucking deadly. It's a mess and the icons randomly delay. Sometimes the big dumb red X doesn't show up for a second so it literally gives you the opposite information of what you should be able to do for a second.oranges wrote:oh you mean the inventory system

The benefit of the system is helping new players in the first 30 minutes of them struggling to play the game, and it's fucking frustrating for all the actual players we should be catering too.
Junk it or make it a preference so I can turn it off.

But "E" already puts held item into nearest available slot.Sometimes I forget whether or not I can put an item in my suit storage/pockets.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
Yeah it's got some issues
1. It's delayed, not really a big deal and I doubt anything can be done about it, but sorta defeats the purpose
2. Makes it harder to notice whether or not your clicks registered when equipping something
Just check how long it takes for you to figure out which one of these items isn't actually real, then imagine doing the same while you're getting attacked and a missed click due to byond's robust netcode can and will kill you

Re: System telling you where you can place items
There needs to be a preference for this. It's a lot more annoying for an experienced player than useful. The hotkey E or clicking and getting the unable to equip message also covers this function.

Wasn't the feature testmerged to acquire valuable feedback? It seems quite invasive

problem with E is that you still don't know where the item is supposed to go when the correct slot is already taken and E puts it straight to backpack/pocket/other storage. Funny thing is, the new feature doesn't help it either: hovering over a taken slot won't tell you if the item can or cannot go there, so new players will still be confused.
Besides some relatively new neck items, I've only had issues with certain clothes in the past, not being able to tell at a glance if it was i_clothing or o_clothing, and this feature wouldn't have helped me if both slots were taken (and i_clothing is always taken by the suit)

Re: System telling you where you can place items
It doesn't matter because oranges closed both PRs, one reverting (understandable) and one making it a preference with the single word no. Obviously this is in oranges' vision for the game so we must accept it.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
I think the main reason for closing it was the amount of admins supporting the revert. Maintainers don't like the server pushing code changes

Re: System telling you where you can place items
The feature being slow is a problem and hopefully that will get fixed.
I'm not going to add a preference to a feature that makes the game easier to play for new players just because old players dislike the UI change and want to shout about it.
Improvements to the feature are welcome, see MSO's more reasoned approach.
Have a nice day.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
A preference is the best improvement this feature could get.
Think of it like tutorial mode on an FPS. Seeing "Press R to reload" and "Press spacebar to jump" is useful for the first hour or so of playing, but after that, the tooltips get annoying or redundant. They're only useful past the first hour in games with confusing controls, but even then, you shouldn't need it for that long.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
Okay, well i'm willing to compromise.
If we make changes to it, (mostly I'm thinking of loosing the X, making the overlay of the item much more alpha and then colouring it red) and make it faster.
If you still hate it after that, what preferences would you lump together in a tutorial mode?

Re: System telling you where you can place items
Sounds reasonable. The two main things in a "tutorial mode" would be examine tooltips and this, but some old players enjoy examine tooltips so I see no reason why the two changes should be lumped into one pref.oranges wrote:Okay, well i'm willing to compromise.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
I like the tool tips and they shouldn’t be barred in your first 5 hours or something.
Idk about other people but is there really a well reasoned argument against inventory system other than we just don’t like it.
What goof said makes no fucking sense. How is making the feature toggleable not a perfect compromise. Forcing a feature people don’t like on to them is a greeaaattt solution.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
From what I understand there are issues with delays here that need sorting out, other than that it mostly appears to be an issue with something changing that they're noticing because it happens frequently.

Re: System telling you where you can place items
Literally what is the problem with making it a preference? It's a helpful visual feature to help new players, and it affects nobody but yourself. Making it toggle-able would make it so the people who don't want it don't have it, and the people who want it have it.

wrong, the PR does nothing but fix the unnecessary aspect of people's dislike for the feature, which is a visual irritant.iamgoofball wrote:they don't want compromise, they want a full removal, and using the preferences as the excuse is the garbage they want to pull to bypass you saying no hard removaloranges wrote:Okay, well i'm willing to compromise.

the correct solution requires a fix in the delay, which is being worked on soon (tm)
