I think the appeal comes from starting from little and moving up to a massive house, farm and family with lots of friends in the town over a long period of time. It's not for everyone but it can be pretty fun.

Rimworld honestly really needs mods to get the most out of it. Luckily, there's hundreds out there and vary from QoL changes to full overhauls.

"gunplay" isn't really the primary function of the game although it plays a major role in combat which is a major aspect of gameplay. it works fine, i dont understand what specifically could be so wrong about it

rimworld is like dorf fort but sci-fi, and instead of feeling like youre running a faction like in dorf fort there's more of a personal emphasis for the colonists. like the goal is less dorf-y and more like you just want to get your dudes through the day alive. (if you manage to make it to very late game this gets less and less true, saves that survive several years can eventually get dozens of colonists but most of the time this will not be the case, especially since at that point you usually will have the means to "win" the save by escaping the planet so playing to this stage will almost always be because you feel like it and not out of necessity.)

it's really fun and so is dorf fort. i believe if you're a fan of one you can be a fan of the other. just try to have an open mind, since it's easy to turn it into a dick measuring contest of "oh, dorf fort has X but rimworld does not, dorf is superior" instead of just experiencing the game

PK hit the nail on the head. With mods I would say I have enjoyed it as much as Dwarf Fort in some ways. It is worth noting that the emphasis on the game is on eventually escaping the planet you are on rather than making a permanent settlement and Tynan has said as much, but with mods you can make it be anything you want it to. I think my modlist has like 30 mods in it now at least

Rimworld - Rimmstation 13 mod

Very difficult, the de hasn't properly balanced the mod for an actual, legitimate early game as you have very little food and zero medicine at the beginning, everything uses components and you can only grow food in hydroponics trays. Open space tiles also slow you down and space carp are very fast and very deadly. You also literally can't play on any start besides the one provided without using Prepare Carefully as it's impossible to build circuit boards without a circuit imprinter which requires a circuit imprinter circuit board to make.

Space carp are spawned from the devil's asshole as they constantly interrupt your building to nibble on you and the security turrets don't shoot at them. If you play this, make sure to play a lot of games first to figure out the rules or cheat because a legitimate first time game *will* end in disaster a few days in.

Oh, and I don't know if this was a mod conflict, but space carp count as humanoid corpses so you can't butcher them for food - unless you like mood penalties.

It's a huge overhaul and it's almost a different game with a high difficulty ceiling if you're playing and not trying to cheat.
Combat is extremely deadly as weapons are very powerful and carp can wreck you if you let them close the distance, syndie operatives can curb stomp unarmoured opponents.
Atmospherics is, for now, simulated purely as a temperature thing with pumps warming up the air like a space heater while scrubbers keep it cool.

Also melee weapons are worthless, don't bother with them.

not because I want to do it, but because each faction has a special module thing that you can get if you've been with them for 4 weeks and I just want to buy a dozen of one particular faction's rapid-fire drunk missile racks before defecting, thus playing them for chumps

I will then load as many of those missile racks as I can fit onto a single ship and bind them all to the same trigger

I don't give a fuck how effective it actually is I just want to pull off a macross missile massacre

i got the botw expansion pass to play master mode and holy shit it's legitimately hard, it's great

enemies regenerating health quickly is still something i'm not sold on but it does force you to be decisive when you attack, you can't turtle or else you're fucked, but that can also be very frustrating when paired with the weapon durability system - if you aren't careful you can completely fuck yourself, which is both really uncool and really fucking cool to me - there's basically no handholding with that

+ enemies are all an extra "level" so they have increased health and damage

+ the mechanic of "if a hit would do more damage than all of your hearts you just get put at 1/4 a heart" is gone

+ some mroe cool shit

was worth the purchase imo

hopefully the dirtbike is cool

cortex command is probably one of the most ridiculously unintuitive games i've ever seen but once it clicks and you undersdtand what is happening it's incredibly fun to overheat your CPU by dropping drop pods with a million crabs on a friend

The train level no longer works, and it's on the old forums where i'd pick up the mods. Basically, three rockets connected to eachother fly between depos. They also have turrets attached. It's such a simple level, and I love it. There's no end to the joy trying to chase the train or crash into it on the other side because it loops at crazy high speeds, and you can also fit other enemies on it if you're careful. If you run the level as a survival and set yourself to team 2, you can ride the trainISH and the turrets will not only shoot other AI trying to get on the train while they keep you on the train by acting as a wall-thing.
