Okay so you've all heard about Europe and Middle Ages and you all know about crap like Cathar Heresy when there was bunch of Cathars living in Languedoc and the Pope and the French King or somesuch declared an Albigensian Crusade to deal with the Cathars and there was banworthy shit like the crusaders besieging a catholic town (there were about 200 Cathars there I think?) and they pretty much killed everyone in that town, all 20 000 people because of those 200 Cathars. They had no way to find the Cathars so they killed everyone to be sure. And they also did a lot of similar stuff.

Okay and you all know about courtly love which was basically when a knight went and choose some woman to be his waifu and he fucked sluts and such but everything he did he did for his pure waifu. They could have a wife and kids but they also were supposed to have a waifu, it was a cool thing to do back then. Apparently muslims did this too, and all this courtly love thing was happening around the times of Cathar Heresy and well basically those people who thought diplomacy meant taking defenseless villagers and chopping off their noses and ears and cutting out their eyes and sending them to their senior's castle all had waifus.

So what I'm saying is,

a) Aya will never be Saeg's waifu
b) Eientei has the best waifus unless you count the ogres
c) Tewi is my pure waifu fuck off

There were like a BUNCH of cathars in the city (Beziers)- the church didn't bother with crusades unless the religious faction in question actually looked like it could maybe compete with them, someday. They also said "Catholics come out so we can slaughter your neighbors", at which point the catholics said "Fuck you, we like our neighbors, they're good peole. We're staying right here, and throwing sharp things at you."

Also the whole thing actually started because the papal legate to languedoc wasn't robust enough to fight off bandits and got murdered on his way back to rome, at which point the church decided MUSTA BEEN THE CATHARS, KILL EM ALL and started a crusade.

there had been a bunch of inquisitions beforehand, this was just the first really big one

the proper inquisition, the spanish one, was set up for unrelated reasons, and I'd argue would have done so with or without the precedent of the medieval inquisition.
