Making Basil public? [Officially happening!]

I'm sure its been talked about before, but what if we made basil/bagil/whatever 'public' and put it on the Byond server list?

What are the reasons for and against this?
Might it be a use of that dying server?

Do we really NEED to advertise? We have a decent population already. I think this would just make shitting up the place easier.

Sure, do it. Wouldn't hurt to have people actually use the second server, it seems really dead 90% of the time.

Community could use some fresh blood, it's getting a little stale and powergamey.

Only reason I could think not to try it is that it would mean that admins:
A.) would have to spend time on basil
B.) would have to deal with pubbies

Open Sybil to the public. It'll be flooded with normies who the powergamers can robust easily, and the good players will migrate to Basil and repopulate it.

I mean I was hoping it would bring some new blood to the server. Our community is becoming quite stale and its got to the point where we bicker at each other.
Of course it will mean basil will become full of pubbies and such and end up being slightly more powergamey. But the off shoot might be that Sybil powergamers move to basil to join that "fun" and the people who are interested in more RP or find out more about the community will naturally find sybil via the forums and website if they spend that little extra effort.

Be nice to see other admins and maybe our headadmins chuck their 10 cents/pence into this discussion.

I get the "joke" but whoever is paying for this, can you like, make it not something that outright tells newbies who visit the page to leave?

This will not work as expected. The normies will find out about tgstation from basil and just go to the higher populated server which is sybil.

It would be really really nice to not have a server be completely dead 90% of the time, I'll be able to actually play on Metastation whenever I want to.

The only thing locked about our server is that you can't see the address on the hub

so really it's more like the door is just in another building

I think a little new blood to the server could be a good thing. I expect it to remain at a low level, as being on the hub does not mean that we will get a big population flood. But it might just be the thing that keeps Basil alive, and adds some population to Sybil on its slow hours. Basil also makes a decent test server, so there is that as well.

We need to put Basil to good use!

I know you are joking, but Basil already has cat people and increased run speed. Even those two things combined were not enough to get the population over the critical threshold (The point at which people will join the server because it is well populated)

MSO or anyone else with config access will probably want to decrease the runspeed on basil because it's already so much faster than every other SS13 server, it'd just confuse people who are new to TG

Not all pubbies will be bad. Though, quite a few likely will be. Hopefully the admins will filter that.

I still don't see why people on sybil don't just play on bagil. Just yesterday it was around thirty five, with around Nine on Sybil even when it went back up. Those nine likely being the ones who came on just to start killing each-other and insulting people for a few minutes before going braindead.
