Is it backwards compatible? I thought of getting a 3ds, but might as well buy Switch and make it my first Nintendo console ever.

And on top of those there's going to be a new xenoblade game, splatoon and a fire emblem/dynasty warriors crossover.
They got me too.

You're going to regret it, like all who trusted in Nintendo when Wii, when Wii-u and when 3DS.
Just a friendly warning.

I was pretty surprised to learn the gamecube did not sell well just because it had so many iconic games. Metroid Prime, Mario Kart double dash, wind waker, Smash fucking Melee, the list goes on.

Yeah pikmen, there are tons of others. Animal crossing was pretty popular. I also played a lot of non exclusives on there despite having a PS4, like phantasy star and Resi4

That's not what that word means.
Most people, new or old, probably had no idea who the hell he was until he was in Smash.
Even then people probably still don't know his actual name beyond "Pikmin Guy"

The Gamecube was a pretty damn good system but Nintenyearolds were really starting to show their stupidity at this point in time. I don't know if the audience just suddenly immatured or what, but weird shit that would've sold well on the N64 just didn't do well at all for marketshare on the Gamecube.
Case in point: Viewtiful Joe only sold .63m worlwide. That's less than one in forty people who bought a gamecube saw that game and thought "This looks fun". What the fuck?
Re: nintendo switch

I think what most likely happened is that everyone bought into the N64 off the SNES hype train. The N64 sold 10m more units than the GameCube did worldwide, but overall I think the sales for software were a lot poorer where people stuck almost entirely to first party games and didn't look at third party titles so much (outside of Rare, which had hits like Goldeneye, Killer Instinct, etc.). The carts were way too expensive and looked and sounded like shit compared to the PSX or Saturn. N64 had better aliasing but the textures were all muddy as fuck. It sounded like someone playing a SNES down the hall from you while PSX supported Redbook audio and FMV easily. The N64 had a shitton of just weird shitty shovelware titles and clunky garbage. Not that PSX didn't too but it was just some nth degree worse on the 64. You're stuck playing Fighter's Destiny or MACE:The Dark Age while your best friend has Tekken and Soul Calibur. Get fucked. You fondly remembered playing Final Fantasy 3 on SNES? Chrono Trigger? Fuck you all that's on PSX now. Enjoy your Quest 64. And that's really what compounded it. It's not that the games were just missing but that the attempts to make up for them not being there made it even worse. The shit was just awful not even in comparison but just in general bad.
After seeing how much wider the software support was for Sony I think more of the "hardcore" audience jumped ship to PS2 next gen, while Nintendo tried too-little-too-late to recoup the 'core audience with a lot more title diversity and fumbled hard because the only customers they had left were the Nintards who just wanted Mario and Zelda over and over and over and over...people who didn't take risks on weird games.
This in turn solidified Ninty's current market strategy of appealing only to the people who want a million Mario remakes and ignoring the hardcore audience like some kind of spurned little brat. They've locked in the casual audience and wont ever look back.
...and that sucks because I think the GameCube was really a fucking great system and has a lot of the crazy, nice, weird stuff that I liked about the Sega vs. Nintendo days. It was the first system I saw Sega produced/published titles cropping up on Nintendo hardware like holy fuck why is Sonic on gamecube this is crazy. The GameCube was a potential future for videogames were Nintendo went balls out trying to nail the 'core audience and bring back their 16-bit SNES glory with Sega on board the hype train too, but it just never materialized. The N64 was such a fuckup nobody really paid attention to it.

tl;dr N64 dropped the ball really hard.
They made the Gamecube real good to try to apologize to people but got butthurt when nobody bought into it.
They got so butthurt, in fact, that now all that make is casualized shit, waggle, and censorship delivered by online services that would've been considered shitty in 2002.

Bravely Default, Xenosaga, Fire Emblem, etc. have all had all sorts of changes foisted onto them recently during localization because Nintendo must protect the children from too much skin, tobacco, or alcohol references.
Even when they aren't removing stuff from games to make them more family friendly their localizations are just plain shit-tier.

iirc directors at nintendo said that with a lot of games they put out they want to at least try to put some new spin on it (although i dont really see that in half the "NEW NEW NEW SUPER MARIO U LUIGI EDITION" games) and with f zero there's not really anything they can do to change racing any more (that they've found yet)
i think it's bullshit though GIVE F ZERO

i cant find the image now but the other day there was a side by side comparison of the game on wii u and on switch and the switch version does look better
i guess if youre planning on getting a switch then get it for switch but if youre not getting a switch either way than just go for wii u version
