[niknakflak] TuxQyou - Permament ban
Posted: Tue Mar 01, 2016 7:54 pm
by TuxQyou
Byond account and character name: TuxQyou
Banning admin: Niknakflak
Ban type (What are you banned from?): Sybil
Ban reason and length: Apparently I'm using a proxy, evading a ban and almost certainly Tunderchief
Time ban was placed (including time zone): 2016-03-01 01:35:48 Timezone not displayed
Your side of the story: I'm as new as it could be and yesterday was the absolutely first time I've played SS13. I'm not using a proxy neither evading a ban, and I don't even know who Tunderchief is
Why you think you should be unbanned: because I'm not using a proxy, not evading any bans and I'm not Tunderchief

Why'd you leave out the second half of the ban reason where I specified even if you weren't Tunderchief that you'd still be banned anyway.
You connected right as his stickyban went rogue, the only new account to connect right afterward.
Your IP is a proxy/reported for proxies and malicious use.
There's no reason not to keep you banned regardless

I tried copypasting the entire ban but BYOND doesn't let me highlight the text, so there's that.
You connected right as his stickyban went rogue, the only new account to connect right afterward.
That's a pure coincidence, however it may sound.
Your IP is a proxy/reported for proxies and malicious use.
Now that's something new considering I'm connected to three different IRC servers in which I could not residue if I was honeypotted.
There's no reason not to keep you banned regardless
I literally did nothing wrong and read all the (server) rules the day before I installed BYOND client and tried to obey them all, and I could have never expected that I'd be banned for being accused of being entirely someone else

Jesus dude yesterday was literally the first day I've played SS13. How can I prove my innocence...?
Edit:
Okay so I'm taking this in my own hands since "ok" is kind of a bland answer.
First of all, to prove I've had this nick since forever, my Freenode's nickserv info:

and that my IP is not a proxy

so please tell me where did you get your info from because it's a mess thanks in advance.

So at best you have a coincidental event "he showed up after a banning event"
and "I googled his ip and bad things came up"
This is a ridiculous ban unless you have more information that you're not sharing for some reason NikNak
edit: especially because I imagine that like most ISP's his IP gets dynamically assigned to him and may randomly change at any time to an IP that was previously used by an abusive user.
Just googling someone's IP and seeing that it was previously blacklisted for x or y is never enough, did you even run a portscan or attempt to use the IP as a proxy to check if actually still was functioning as a proxy?

He's either the most well planned ban evader in the world or you've ruined some poor guys day in your haste to get ban evaders.

Post the rest of the evidence then, because what you have here is not enough.
All I see is you banning someone based on some hearsay and then some random shit you googled. Then he shows up and has evidence he's used that given name for literally 2+ years and it makes you look incompetent.

Ahh that classic Niknak response, I don't like what you're saying so I'm going to give a flippant non answer and do my best to ignore you.

I don't see what is unreasonable about asking you to justify a ban that so far appears to be based purely on some facts you pulled out thin air.

I've confirmed that the ip is now starting to leave these blacklists, so it's likely that it was bad luck with getting a new ip by your ISP.
I'll come back to this later tonight and look at the other piece of evidence, the stickyban match.

Alright, so.
I helped niknak with this, and confirmed the ip as a likely proxy.
Even if I am on this list I wasn't aware of, how is that related to my IP being a proxy (which is not)? I had troubles with my ISP being on spamlists and all he told me is that (sorry, vague memory, may not be entirely what he said) he knows because it's that type of IP (frankly didn't quite understand him) so there's that. My IP is static, but if everyone falsely accuses me of being a proxying spammer, I can always phone my ISP to change my IP so everything is hopefully great.
I'll come back to this later tonight and look at the other piece of evidence, the stickyban match.
Alright great but what the hell is a stickyban? I asked people three times in #supportbus and nobody answered me.

stickyban is a byond black box of sorcery that somehow links people together with alt accounts and then bans them
it used to be pretty reliable but lately it's been on the fritz, so i wouldn't ascribe any special significance to it banning you
it's banned me about 5 times in the past week for a bunch of stuff i never did.
MSO is a wizard though, so he'll figure out the truth either way, just be patient tbh

To be honest when the stickybans goes on the fritz its normally pretty obvious, its not a case of accidently linking just a couple of extra people, it normally suddenly links almost ALL the people connected, including admins. So I doubt that would be the case.
It also be nice to know what was the other banning reason you suggested that they would be banned for, should they not be the evader. Seems pretty relevant.

when the sticky ban system goes rogue, the first match is almost always a legit match, its the ones that follow that aren't.

On that note, he was not the first match of the sticky ban system going rogue.
we still aren't 100% sure you aren't thunder so you might be under a bit more then normal admin attention, but the freenode nick is pretty convincing, and i've found evidence of you using this nick going back further, so I've removed the ban.
