With a new upcoming feature by our loved and hated Oranges/optimumtact a new feature is coming making stun batons only stun while in red alert PR being this one:
https://github.com/tgstation/tgstation/pull/73492
The new topic of discussion in policy within LRP rules being:
Is it agains't the rules to set the station's alert to Red round start for security officers to be able to use batons?

ETA to merge: 1 month~ (after feature freeze)
ETA to iron out workarounds that let it be easily circumvented: 1 month~
yeah once all that happens people will start red alerting to get around it. will probably be very hard to tell when they're doing it since you can red alert over plenty of things on LRP in good conscience
still this is like 2 months down the line

S freeze exempt, we would otherwise not allow any feature work during a freeze

Also brings up the question of if someone resists arrest for something petty, is security allowed to harmbaton into submission?

the batong is significantly weaker when you have friends, however this requires ss13 players to make friends

At this point I just take everyone 100% seriously because there's been two or three times now that I thought something was a joke and it turns out it was real.
Me reading the GitHub PRs and the changelogs.

I don't think there's a ruling about this, but it's generally considered that you need a good reason to set red alert. "I want to use batons" is not a good reason.

Rule 12 will already handle this. Decreasing RP quality (raising alert level without a valid reason) in order to powergame and make the game more boring violates this. Quite simple really

I get an amber alert every two weeks when someone loses a kid. Why wouldn't you call for a red alert if there is a murderer on the run you need to apprehend. I would be pretty alerted if one of my coworkers was found dead.

Is "I want to call the shuttle as early as possible because it's a greenshift" considered a good reason? Or is that something that should be ahelped?

There's no way to do it without hooking a bunch of procs in the stunbaton code so most likely no.

Yeah I feel like IRL if someone got murdered it would be up to code red. On ss13 it's just another day

Any instance of red alerting for the sole purpose of getting the shuttle there faster
without a valid reason should be ahelped.
Valid reasons include "alien infestation" and "nuke ops" or even "ascended heretic". Centcom reserves the right to cancel the shuttle call in any case.

We don't feel the need to make any policy changes surrounding a joke PR that was quickly reverted
