youtube can only break even because it piggy backs on infrastructure google already has to pay for as the cost of doing their business as a cloud provider/search engine/ad network.

Same reason amazon can buy twitch and make it work.

If you don't have a large existing infrastructure for storage/broadcast for other reasons, these business are never going to be profitable or able to compete with youtube/twitch, they make no economic sense outside of that context.
