Apparantly the source will be released shortly. I wonder what that will mean for the future of SS13.

Wow. So much potential in this, it's kinda hard to comprehend.

do we need to prove that open source is better for development or what
/tg/ and /vg/ coders are collabing on a spiritual successor, nothing could go wrong with hornygranny, pomf, and n3x15 leading the charge in this source code's development

it's literally already happening right now.

A new future for space station 13.
Who knows what will happen, nonetheless I hope something good comes out of this.

As we know supernorns sprites wont be there though. Measures are already being put in place but for now the remake is going to be opensourced with codersprites. Not to mention a lot of the content we uave will need to be recreated for the remake. Medical is bareoy existant. There is atmos and some other bits and bobs but its really the engine that has been made so far not much else.
Spriters will be needed later on when more content exists but really at the moment only a engine and some things exist as we have heard.
We are talking a hell of a lot for what design should be done with everything from power to medicine to UI to money. Its going to be a while. But its hopefully getting there
We found out a day or eo ago and have been in a mad frenzy talking about it but are wanting to keep it low key due to the fact that its nothing truly complete and ready as we know.

I could make 3D sprites that won't look shit and actually work well!

Not sure about the complaints surely you can see the potential in this without being restricted by Byond. If you look at this picture they posted a while ago (not sure if art or ingame actually):

I just realised why it looks so bad: "The original sprites for the game, created by Adam Riches, have been withheld for use in a future project at his discretion. The original sprites have been replaced with placeholder images."

I honestly dont know what you guys where expecting it to look like. This game isnt near done and they took a lot of the art assets out because of legal reasons.
What matters is that we have base, an engine we have a start which is far more then any other project has had yet we can't just sit and complain about how little was done, otherwise we will never get to play spessmen in HD.
On that note where are HornyGranny and the others updating there work?

I know, I was implying with my comment that I'm looking forward to someone making new sprites that don't look goofy. This is a good thing.

I am very excited, and I aim to try and get involved where possible.
Depending on the enthusiasm of other coders, that may mean our codebase stagnates, though.

Sorry, i was getting mad because it seemed that everyone was complaining as though the original creators of this engine were being lazy.

You fucking learn how to code. You don't start running until you know how to walk, do you? Take a few C-Sharp tutorials, that's the language this seems to be written in, there are plenty on the internet.

Here is a really good tutorial for all interested in learning C#. Its long but the person making it is very good at describing everything in a way that at least i understand.
For anyone else getting System.IO.FileNotFoundException you are supposed to run "Build resource pack" in the resource folder of the source code. Sorta wish there was some way for us stupids to be told that but whatever.

SS14 has a Phabricator page we are going to move everything from the current graphical stuff to OpenGL in order to allow Macs and linux to play.

I think that one of the best things we can do to keep this remake from dying is just spread the word. Annoying people in OOC and Deadchat maybe even doing a full announcement on the site i don't know I am certain that given the opperotunity to leave the junky BYOND engine most people would happily jump ship. And then leave once they realize it doesn't have the same numer of options as TG allready has. But it would still be in there heads and that is what is important at this stage and in the future.

Does anyone else think a 3d remake of the game will suck? So much of this game comes from the poor graphics and shitty interface. Is it going to be the same old text chat? I cant help but feel like whatever comes out the other end will either completely suck dicks or be so unrecognizable it will not even be space station 13 anymore.

They also said their art guy wanted to use them for other projects. Its a shame though.

Well, one early decision that you will have to make is whether you'll keep human sprites static like they're now, or animate them. Currently, animating human sprites in /tg/station13 would be too much of an effort because you'd also have to animate
every piece of clothing that already exists. But if you agree on animated sprites from the start in SS14, you will raise your workload but not run into this problem further down the line.
You'll have to settle for a general style for the game too. I made these little sprites a while ago:
But although the saturated colour palette and dark (not black) outlines might work, I don't really think these proportions are suitable for SS13/14.
