With the IC chat filter PR merged, I would like to discuss what we should begin to filter using this system.
Ideally, not much will be filtered. Common netspeak violations like lol, wtf, xd, and so on will go on the list. I would like people to submit other common forms of netspeak / OOC in IC in this thread.

What I am looking for:
• Common forms of netspeak.
• Anything else OOC that should be filtered from IC chat.

What I am not looking for:
• Curse words or slurs - This is IC and we are not looking to be hugbox and censor the speech of others.
• Arguments like, "I say it in real life!" - No one cares that you're socially inept.
• Code discussions - Feel free to make improvements to the system yourself, but I'd like this thread to stay on the topic of how we can use the filter we have now.

Keep in mind that this system is to make a frequently seen policy issue easier for admins to moderate.
I am primarily looking to add OOC terms only to the list. The goal is to not make it some shitty chat filter that censors swear words or other stuff not against the rules.
As it works right now, the filter simply blocks the message that contains the filtered word and tells the player to not use netspeak/read the rules.

OOC, admin, afk, lmao, rofl, antag, gamemode

you would probably want to filter emoticons like =) =( :d XD xd Xd xD :p ;p :3 etc

Adding reddit seems fine by me

Things like admin/gamemode/antag seem a bit invasive into things people would and could say in character in a valid context

I kinda also wanna hear someone talk about their space reddit blog ingame but I doubt anyone is that creative, they could just say space-reddit instead and dodge the filter

Rounds could be used to refer to bullets, so I think it shouldn't be on the list. The list should only include things that don't have any context where they would be allowed.

It's not great for people to say this IC'ly, but it's not OOC or against the rules, and does not fit the use case for the filter. The others in your list look fine.

This is a valid concern, but keep in mind that we won't be running into the Scunthorpe problem because of how the filter works.

I think there is an argument to be made that lol and lmao aren't ooc in ic. It maybe somewhat outside the extent of this thread but I figure I will bring it up anyways. These are things that people say outloud in regular conversation pretty normally. When I'm talking to my friends I say lol and lmao sometimes and so do they. Lots of people do it. You could argue that people don't talk like that 500 years in the future, but I don't think thats an appropriate argument for a low RP server. People communicate with each other in the game in the same way that they would in real life and it's strange to expect people to speak differently because "500 years in the future people have different mannerisms than people in 2019" in a low RP server.

There's plenty of valid ways the word valid can be used that aren't referring to someone's status as a valid.

yeah i'm thinking we should keep it simple, it should be used for the bare minimum most braindead obvious ooc in ic things. things like ":)" or "=D" for example. full words like admin, valid, round, etc have no place in the filter

In general, make sure the filter only filters things by themselves. There are valid words that contain "lol" in them for example.

Also, certain words should translate to something. For example, typing "lol" or "lmao", instead of simply not appearing, could be altered to "Haha". Brb could become "be right right back", "wtf" to "what the fuck" etc

Even emojis could become a /me thing. Messages with ":(" could have a "<Name> frowns" right after the message or ":)" could have "<Name> smiles"

It will be, in general, far less frustrating to players when their messages aren't eaten by the void and are instead translated into valid in game messages. It also helps people not having to type the whole "as far as I know".

If chinese cartoon porn forums can do word translation, I am sure ss13 can.

Limit it to just netspeak please. Netspeak doesnt have a place but certain game terms like admins, its revs, and the like, will be disruptive as hell. Also limiting non-netspeak terms would make teaching new people about game mechanics hell, as often you have to use pseudo OOC language to help.

For example, restricting the word admins is stupid because you could be referring to centcom in character. It is a plausable in character way to talk about centcom.

I hate the slippery slope argument but this tool should be used VERY CAREFULLY.

I suggested this in the PR but I aint a coder so I dont really have much of a say. Wordfilters would be the proper tradition for a 4chan related server anyway.

I wouldn't include ahelp or adminhelp as Holoparasites, Guardians, imaginary friends and a few other roles commonly act as instructors to new players and blocking such phrases from being spoken can make it more difficult or lengthy to explain certain concepts or things about the game, or how to quickly learn about something relevant to their situation.

I think ahelp and adminhelp is valid. I usually instruct people to contact command or nanotrasen or your local union representative. Something along those lines.

I agree. Honestly this whole thing seems like bullshit just like the honorifics debacle. An admin acted a retard and banned someone for netspeak and someone tried to appeal it and then the admins started crying “muhhhh imurshun.” because they don’t want to admit they fucked up. I can’t recall a time where someone used netspeak and I was so absolutely mad about it I ahelped it.

A "traitor" isn't what they are in character, they're more spies/infiltrators/saboteurs if anything. Most people even call them agents/syndie/syndicate/operative/etc because it makes more sense in the game universe.
