So that if you get a foot cut off you can still wear one shoe and same for gloves

seperate pants and shirts, jumpsuits are pants that have a roll up function that takes up your shirt slot

second ear kinda sounds dumb but the shirt/pants thing is a good idea.

This is far too much work for an astronomically small amount of gain.

Now I don't know what I'm talking about, but couldn't you just erase one shoe or glove creating sprite variants, and then replace default sprite with variant upon delimbing?

you would need two extra sprites for every shoe and glove.
a left only and a right only.

so n shoes and n glove sprites, times 2.
We have about 20 shoe sprites, as a guess, and I'd assume about the same for gloves.

I don't think we should add 80 (20 x 2 + 20 x 2) more sprites, and add on another 2 sprites requirement whenever someone adds a new shoe/glove sprite.

It can't be done dynamically due to the way humans are drawn, shoes overlap each other so if you had to remove the foreground shoe you'd only be left with a slit 1-2 pixels wide representing the other shoe, which would mean your barefoot would be on display and that's just all wrong and not going to happen.

would it not be simpler just to have losing a limb not cause you to unequip your gloves/shoes?

enjoy floating gloves and floating shoes then.

While I'm opposed to literally making gloves into two items, it would be cool if you could wear gloves with only one arm and just have it cut up automatically.

However as Remie said doing it dynamically is not possible right now and would require a fairly massive overhaul of human rendering. Which would be good in general I suppose, it would be nice to do the same for jumpsuits, exosuits, shoes, masks, hats, (for hair) etc.

What happened with humans and dismemberment, would essentially have to happen with clothing.

Human Sprite -> Many Limb Sprites (Either specifically coloured or Greyscaled)
Clothing Sprite -> Many Limb Specific Sprites

It would obviously change how spriters have to work with clothing too.

One crazy not-currently-in-the-ballpark idea that would benefit from this, of course, is animations.
Previously we couldn't animate as Humans were a stiff 4-dir sprite, where as now they're per limb.
Per Limb Clothing is now the only blockage between us actually attempting some simple-looking* animations.

Spoiler:
Like this animation I made in college:
(Potato quality is because this is a .gif version of a Flash animation, so it's compressed and gross)
The Assistant would be about what we'd go for I assume.

how feasible would it be to redo the movement to not be tile based and run similar to project zomboid

that way we can just hold control to aim and shoot people and have perfect flawless pixel by pixel animations that required 300 hours of work to completely transfer too

Guess I underestimated the amount of work this would be
