Contextual crafting was so much better than this schlock
I don't care if it makes more sense code wise or whatever
The menu is so fucking stuuuuuuuuuuppid ohhhhh my gooooood
Contextual crafting is more interesting and intuitive

Pretty sure there was already one attempt at going full crafting menu/contextual crafting, and it ended with contextual crafting surviving because MSO wanted it to.

I feel like the crafting menu could be instantly improved 10x if you added a button to quickly jump to any list you want instead of being forced to move from page to page until you are in the category you want. This would be especially useful for cooks.

slapcrafting is the name for it

slapcrafting makes you feel like you're actually doing something rather than perpetuating that ss13 is the ui clicker, horziontal sprite renderer we are all complaining that it has become.

also it's much more interesting.

I actually rather like the crafting menu, but it can DEFINITELY use improvements. I think if we made it closer to CDDA's crafting menu, it would be a lot more usable.

Here's what it has that we don't.

-Subcategories
-Separates the craftable objects, components required, and the item's stats/description into three separate windows.
-Tools and components required are flexible, multiple alternative options possible. (Any object with hammering ability, crowbar or makeshift crowbar).
-Lots of details on what the objects are, their stats (damage, weight class etc)
-Color coding
-Loads and loads of filters and search functions.
-Batches (1x 5x 10x kind of thing, used in only the protolathe, autolathe, and biogen right now.)

Now I recognize we'd need a pretty major amount of information added to each and every item in the game for this to give us sufficient information, but if clock cult has shown us anything, it's that it's absolutely possible to do that. Clock cult has a wonderful amount of information about every item, ability, and synergy in it, we can aspire to be a little more like it in that regard, if nothing else.

It is however completely ridiculous to think that contextual handcrafting is more intuitive than a system with loads of information on what can/can't be used to craft it.

(I actually agree with wjohnson a CDDA-esque crafting menu would be much much better than any other crafting menu we could dream up and information playing a heavier role in crafting is great and i love it and fund it but;)

Tablecrafting is fine except the menu its laid out in sucks horribly.

The crafting menu needs to list all catagories in a way that makes it instant to navigate it, instead of skipping through twenty categories to find the one you want.

This. For starters all food things should be in one food category that has sub categories.

Food was originally a single category, but it destroyed potato (ironic) computers so goof made it 20 pages instead of 1.

Who cares if the code is bad, if it works it works, and as an added bonus your game doesn't crash and you don't have to wait a century every time you want to make a cake.

The code being good matters.

It's a question of getting cool new features today versus getting cool new features tomorrow. You weren't around before we moved to GitHub and before we upheld decent standards, but the code became such a convoluted mess that now, after years of refactoring, there are still significant components of code that only the most experienced coders can deal with because of all the crap added to the code in the name of "who cares as long as it works". Without code quality standards, the code becomes convoluted until only a group even smaller than those currently in charge (and for the most part a subset of said people in charge) is even capable of making changes.
