It would look massively better and more thematic.
that's all

Huh? How would a lava parallax even work?

I think you just toss parallax in lava and hope it doesn't burn up.

Its cheap coming from me, but this idea could have fitted in the minor ideas thread.
As to the idea, it'd require lava to not have the same sprite over and over, but could look cool i guess.

Alright, here's something you guys should've realized long ago. Space parallax works because stars are distant. Far away. While you move a tile, stars are where they always were, you just see them from a slightly different position.
How do you expect lava to work this way?

A shimmering moving effect like waves i imagine.

Lava is distant and down a ledge.

Then how do you easily walk out of it when you accidentally walk over it.

He's got you there, chasms don't have anything to animate the parallax and the visual difference is different because all of lavaland is sea-level* (if you count lava as a sea)

How do you not get torn apart when a hull breach happens?
Magic.
Aka.
It's a game.

By this logic the lava would spread, not stay still.

Isn't parallax the bad guy from Green Lantern

What he's trying to say is that having a wave or movement effect on lava as opposed to immovable shinny red shit on the floor would be nice, the first thing he could think of was how the space tiles parallax worked.
Which yes, that would be great.

This was something I worked very, very hard to do. I do not like how parallax is currently implemented, not the least because it limits us to exactly one parallaxing texture at a time. Unfortunately the system I came up with has exceptionally poor performance. I'd prefer to hack it up and just swap out the space texture for a lava or chasm texture when you move to lavaland and back to space when you leave.

Parallax only occurs because something is very, very far away from you. Such as slow moving mountains in the distance when contrasted with much faster moving trees/ground near you. Space effectively doesn't MOVE in reality (but we do it in SS13 anyway, because it's pretty).
Lava is both right in front of you, and is also not see-through so it's not like you'd see the different depths of crusty rocks on the top and different layers of moving lava underneath it. Parallax here makes no sense whatsoever, it would be implying the lava is a hundred feet below you for it to make sense, and you can clearly get out when this happens.
Parallax for 3d terrain with the below z-levels would be super cool, but I'm not sure if there's a good way to do this without resulting in rooms suddenly sticking out too far past their own tiles. It'd need testing.

Just animate it and then spread it out randomly like basalt tiles i guess.

oooh oooh have chunks of basalt floating on top of the lava use the parallax so it's kind of like they're drifting around based on your perspective

I am like 90% sure that pillz just meant to make lava animated and cooler looking rather than actual parallax scrolling which doesnt make any sense in this context
