Bottom post of the previous page:

Being born somewhere doesn't necessarily give you the right to claim that land
But it is a pretty big advantage and definitely helps

To the victor goes the spoils

Not saying it's very fair, but back when the US was founded and the natives were getting fucked they got off pretty easy all things considered for that era.

I'm not going to argue morality here but I would bet if Puerto Rico got to vote (they are a territory instead of a state) he probably would change his tune.

2012 statehood vote

Of those who answered on the second question 834,191 (61.11%) chose statehood, 454,768 (33.34%) chose free association, and 74,895 (5.55%) chose independence

Sounds like they want to be part of the US to me

Stupid Puerto Ricans wanting statehood they can't have.

Why do the US still bother with Puerto Rico? Is there any actual advantage from having it as a territory, besides "more clay"? It seems to me that any profit you gain from it goes down the drain when such things happen, yes obviously you can refuse to send help but only for so long. Not to mention the constant threat to republicans in case dems reach power and make it a state. Could the US just unilaterally cut them free?

If you claim clay you must support clay in theory. Currently we are seeing "in practice"

Also companies use the "territory" status of Puerto Rico to get away with some shadiness while still being in the US.

Also trump wanted to "buy it" back when he was campaigning.

Why would you even want Peurto Rico to be a state?
Aren't they still third world levels of poor? Wouldn't that seriously fuck up both their economy and yours? Federal minimum wage laws alone might kill off all the local businesses if they're poor enough

I'll admit I don't know much about the place. It's not really important to me or on the world stage

If you are the government you have a responsibility to the people you govern.

As far as the economy stuff goes: look at east germany and west germany when they reunited. The same argument was made (via reganomics!), it didn't pan out then and it wouldn't pan out now.

Plus I find the idea that East-German businesses would go bankrupt a laughable one since they were under the communists

good

Edit: However I am not sure a 10 day waver is long enough for a territory that was bankrupt in the first place then basically trampled by the weather.

Half the water supply is straight up fucked and was dodgy to begin with. People are drinking ground water and their shitty most toxic in us leaky old pipes are letting ground water and crap in while the pressure is gone.

As easy to issue as this waiver apparently is, it can just as easily be renewed.

They're not an ally, they're the equivilant of a vassal in modern day.

Congress has authority over Puerto Rico due to their territory constitution, which came about due to the Puerto Rico Federal Relations Act of 1950 that was accepted by the people of PR via referendum.

All people born in PR are considered natural born citizens of the US.

They held a referendum on statehood on June 11, 2017 with the options "stay as is" "become independent" "become a state", and 97% of the votes were for become a state, but the problem was that only 23% of voters turned out for the referendum. This is because every major political party in PR boycotted the referendum for one reason or another.

No lol.

Liberia as a country was founded as basically a quasi southern state in Africa.

Ex American slaves went over there and used the same techniques slave owners in the south did. The native Liberian population has always been more than the african-american population.
