[<Vektor>] WebcomicArtist - guillotine note

Post by KingKuma » #778172

Ban/note type (Server Ban/Discord Ban/Forum Ban/Note): note

Ban/note duration: Permanent, Medium Severity
Ban/note reason: Clicked on a loaded guillotine that he thought was fake because a clown made it. It wasn't and that person now has no head. Lowered to warning because they were revived quickly and the matter was handled properly IC. Don't click on things that kill people if you don't know how they work.
Time ban was placed: April 25th, 2023
Server you were playing on when banned: Manuel
Round ID in which ban was placed:204382

Why are you making this appeal? (Put an x in the boxes):
() - The ban/note is factually incorrect
(x) - The ban/note is not against the rules
() - The ban/note needs modification
(x) - The ban was unjustifiably harsh
() - I was permabanned and I want another chance

Why should this appeal be accepted?:

Okay, so a bit of context: The person who got decapitated was, if knowledge serves, the warden. The guillotine was built right outside of brig, by the clown, who was if memory serves, doing some kind of civil protest bit. I was not new to the game at this point. However, I'd never seen, nor used a guillotine before. At some point, the warden ended up in said guillotine. I don't recall any fighting (as a warden could easily krav a clown into next Tuesday), and, absentmindedly, i clicked on the guillotine, more out of curiosity than anything else. Naturally, this ended up with a headless warden and me hiding in maints, rightfully scared that a sec patrol was going to perma me. (which they did.)

Now for my actual proper argument:
1. The ban/note is not against the rules: I am not saying going around cutting peoples heads off for the lulz isn't against the rules. Of course it is. The part I personally find fault with is the end sentence: "Don't click on things that kill people if you don't know how they work." There is a LOT of stuff that can kill someone really easily in this game, and I feel given the main way of learning what things do in this game is clicking on them, I don't think this is fair. Now granted, there is an argument to "it's a guillotine you know what a guillotine does", but clowns are well known for having fake versions of "lethal" items (toy esword, foam armblade, etc). Basically my argument is: "I clicked on something dangerous in the game and a person died, but clicking on dangerous things is how you learn that they're dangerous in the first place in this game."

2. The ban was unjustifiably harsh: Now, this is just an assumption, but by the wording of "Lowered to warning because they were revived quickly and the matter was handled properly IC.", this implies if it hadn't been handled IC (e.g. sec justifiably throwing me in perma), I'd have gotten a full-on ban for this. Additionally, being my only moderate note in 3 years playing I feel shows I'm here in general good faith.

aaaaanyway hope that is enough info to satisfy the required format. I could dig through logs if needed but im not sure if the logs from 2023 exist anymore.

Hello, I appreciate you coming to appeal this decision.

I'll respond to both of your points in order and then give my personal insight at the end.

1. The ban/note is not against the rules: I placed the note because I consider walking up to a guillotine and firing it off without actually having any context as to the situation to be a rule 1 violation. You had been playing here long enough to understand what a guillotine does and your excuse of 'I thought it was fake' did not do enough for me to believe you weren't aware of the consequences of your actions. Your argument about "clicking on dangerous things being how you learn they're dangerous" would make sense here if it wasn't something that is a very well-known torture device of which the purpose is common knowledge. This would be like picking up a gun, firing it at someone, and saying, "I didn't know it'd hurt them!".

2. The note is unjustifiably harsh: I also disagree. The fact that I lowered it to a warning is an explicit statement that this would have normally been something I would have banned you for, but I decided not to because you took steps in-character to resolve the problem, which showed to me that you understood what you did was wrong. However, the issue still occurred, and not making record of it would be poor diligence on my part, in the event you chose to do something like this again in the future. In regards to your clean history since that note, that's unfortunately completely irrelevant; we don't retroactively remove notes because you have been a good child for a certain amount of time.

So I have no real interest in removing this note. Nothing you've said really convinces me that it's doing you any undue harm, nor that you didn't break any rules when it was placed. I would not have any concern over how it would impact your record going forward, as notes older than six months are not typically taken into account unless they are significantly severe, such as rule 8 or 11 violations.

I understand the desire to have a completely clean record, but having a single note isn't a problem here. Many of the admins do. I had a run of bans early in my history on /tg/ for crashing out in OOC over dying. Just keep doing what you're doing now and everything will be fine.

Okay, thanks for the re-assurance. That works too.

Yeah, no problem. Thanks for understanding. I'm gonna go ahead and move this on, if you're okay with that.
