Our TG mappers and artist

Post by iansdoor » #774290

Back in October and November of last year, they were mishandled poorly, before I retired completely. I know that in the admin bus itself, there wasn't much chatter from headmins and admin collective to defend or calm down the mistrust towards them. I will say that over the last year, the folks that enjoyed creating on our space, has dwindled and shrink to the point, where our annual toolbox and art contests couldn't garner enough interest to be hosted.

So what will you do as Headmin in regards of this serious problem? I do see that some folks came back together to host another bout of toolbox, but the main brain crew is still absent or disinterested in so.

We do have a Toolbox Tourney on the horizon! Which is awesome, nature is healing.

Outrage is a combination of surprise and anger, so if you don't surprise people with things that make them angry it can go better. It's our responsibility to inform the community.

Now that things are calmer and on the upswing it's time to get together and make some informative materials, I'd commission them with my own funds if need be. Something more engaging and informative than a ping. I think that if there had been earlier awareness and more information about the wallening that discourse could have started from a better position.

I believe this is a serious issue of miss management, not mainly from our side but from the codebase, having mapped for TG and having been active in those spaces seeing how some of the maintainers acted I am not at all surprised we lost so many good folks, your map can just be toggled off in a few messages and that feeling sucks. I would say we admins have great use of mappers and I would love to coordinate more mapping events with the maptainer team because I do believe those work really well for getting new contributors to the codebase and new mappers for our community as a whole. I don't have the amount of funds to directly bank roll mapping but I can offer in game rewards for contributing to such events, imagine a new march into mapness but it would more likely be mapping mainly may or something.

I believe some headmin terms have also done a good job of alleviating mapper stress from the admin team, things like making it a conduct break to swap maps because you hate the map and in general defending mappers. I would like to replicate this behaviour, contributors are a great asset to this game and I hate to see em driven off.

Rex brings up some good points and its a pretty good fact that our community can be pretty rough towards mappers or new maps: Finding another way to run maps through Events or the such could be a good way to encourage it. For example, me and rex recently hosted Capsandis /t/ vs /g/ event, using their map for it

I have always been a fan of birdshot and was always a fan of Northstar. I dont know how much of this area a headmin has control over but I can say on my part I would advocate against any map removal without lots of discussion. Cheshify trained me to be an admin so when they retired over this I was very sad.

Headmins have complete control over the map configs, so you decide what maps run and at which pop levels they run.

No tangible control over which maps do or don't get added to the codebase, although you have soft influence through leveraging the above.
