Remove Common
Headsets would be tuned to their department instead of common, using ; would send a message to the department radio instead and so on.
Assistants would get their own dipshit channel.
This would give an actual purpose to a lot of shit in the game like holopads and requests consoles that currently are drastically inferior to ";HELP MAINT!!"
If you really need to yell at another department and they're ignoring you go yell in person.

I have mixed feelings. It gives a purpose to departmental sec, making sec one of the few places with access to every comms channel. It makes intercomms, holopads, etc. have a purpose. On the downside, it buffs murderboners and leads to a lot more work for the AI when it's ordered to do everyone's departmental communication. How often does actually meaningful interdepartment communication happen on the common channel? It's pretty much always just a "shouting at each other for no good reason" channel. Lack of interaction between departments is entirely a mechanical problem and not a communication problem. If interaction is truly needed, you can use holopads, requests consoles, PDAs, desk announcements, intercoms, you really have a lot of options that are more interesting than just ";Can rnd come fucking upgrade cloning already?"
I thought about it and murderboning wouldn't really be affected significantly. It just takes one desk announcement for the whole station to know, and a desk announcement can be made by at least one person per departmental channel. Unless it's assistants, in which case they deserved to die anyways. If anything it would buff stealth play massively, less easy access to station wide communication makes identifying covert people much more difficult.

We tried this and it made mass murder way too easy because you don't really have time to make desk announcements when you have an e-sword where your lungs ought to be

What about on lowpop times? On lowpop there might not be a command position to make a desk announcement. There might not even be sec making it even more necessary to have common because security won’t be able to save you. There will also be significantly less people so you might end up just sitting there with no one to talk to because no one else is in your department.

Remove common, but give every crew member a self-defense tazer in their starting box. Make it like a weakened tazer that can't penetrate armor (like Sec and the captain wear) or hardsuits.

I actually kind of like this idea, but separate from the whole common removal side. Give everyone some kind of "slam and run" self defense weapon.
