I'd gotten through most of the game during the entire time my computer was put to other uses but jesus christ, I somehow blocked out all memories of this game because of how shit it was. I guess it was rushed out the door or something because I can tell they had ideas and it being the first game of the series put onto PS3 since the rest were PS2 probably shows off they were trying hard since they couldn't reuse the old minimal polygon assets (although some parts were worse than PS2 graffix given the lack of effort).
I did have some fun when the content was repetitive/had a loop. So the flying around (despite poor implementation of motion controls/a giant deadzone makes any turning a jar with no soft bank), hunting the few leviathan souls and the on rails pirate space ship shooter which unfortunately is bad even for an on rails shooter and I only give it a free pass thanks to the pirates being the B story that stole the spotlight so hard the A story didn't progress until the B story's villain was terminated.
Probably like all R&C games it's for baboos to play and baboo designers to mass produce, so there's nothing to write home about in the gameplay department besides my nostalgia telling me every other game in the series left me with less of a disappointment in bosses, standard gameplay, puzzles, platforming, visuals and story. Although come to think of it, 2 had growing pains with ugly levels and a forgettable story, 3 was shite for gameplay with bland colours, Gladiator was too easy, Crack was just muh OC dwama with a feeling that the universe wasn't living, into the Vagina just had Crack's worst features whilst making new but worse assets for some reason... but I played through them all and liked them all as a child.
In the end I'm wondering why a yootoober, Qbopper knows this one, spent an hour complaining about the R&C remake and how it ruuuined what was a great series and rewrote the main characters when the only things I like without nostalgia blinding me are Qwark when not a cameo, every appearance of the pirates outside of fighting them and any of the repeating gameplay loops (arena, assault course, wasteland raritanium things, vidcomics, leviathan souls, platforming planetoids, at least half of the trespasser puzzle variants).
I didn't like any of the PS3 ratchet games tbh so it isn't a personal affront when you shittalk them
they scrapped a lot of the great elements of the original series in favour of new, shitty returning characters, an almost offputting redesign of old characters, the weapon design started to feel a little more stale, and the tropes (like you mentioned, arena challenges, etc.) become painfully obvious
everyone else has a hardon for a crack in time and it was just kinda boring to me
I really liked 2's levels so you're wrong LOL
3 had some issues with the HUD (ORANGE) but the planets were pretty lively beyond the first two or three levels
ratchet and clank has never been the pinnacle of game design but i think they're a solid "for all ages" game and i can respect them for what they are, but after they hit the PS3 the charm was drained out of it in favour of something a lot "softer" i guess
