Monstrosity Gamemode
It's time for That Cool Mode I'll Never Actually Code that vg will probably steal or something.

tl;dr
1-4 murder beasts that have to murder the crew for limited upgrades that only one of them can have at a time
one guy got the upgrade you want before you could? better go fucking murder them so you can get it
0% conversion, 0% cooperation, 100% murder beasts fighting the crew and each other

Obvious murderfests are really boring and unfun SS13 combat isn't very good and there's already several gamemodes about making people turn horizontal

Every new feature added requirea potential rebalancing of existing features and deep consideration of how it will fit on and affect the game as a whole (at least, any well conceived feature.) When it is in, every future tweak, refactor, and feature will need to work around both the new code and the new gameplay, balance, and implications of every feature before it.
Feature bloat is a real thing and it doesn't take any level of coding knowledge to recognize this.
As for variety or "it might be fun" the op even says it's just a mass murder mode. Make as many players horizontal as possible already exists in several other forms, why is a new shade of paint going to make it any different?

What point about feature bloat? Having multiple antags that kill people in different ways isn't feature bloat. Feature bloat is old clockcult where tons of the spells and equipment were completely and utterly useless, where feature bloat in your mind is an esword and a revolver because they both kill people by clicking on them, and is frankly stupid.

The end result is that a couple players get to have fun the first couple times they get the mode because they are just given express directions to murderbone and then it gets stale because the mode just revolves around mindless killing in a game with really shallow combat anyway. At least with wizard or ops, it's open enough to try gimmicks or go formulate strategies deeper than just kill anything that moves.ShadowDimentio wrote:What point about feature bloat? As for everyone else, you either throw yourself at the monster and either die or click it a lot and turn the round into extended, or the shuttle gets forcecalled and everyone hides until they can escape and restart the round.
If this gets added it ought to replace wizard or ops, but those are both already conceptually deeper and more interesting than this.
I dunno, it could be interesting as a random event but at that point I doubt anyone would be willing to put nearly as much effort into it.

can you explain to me what about this gamemode will allow crewmembers without weaponry to enjoy it? not trying to be rude, but I think another gamemode that relies on whatever happens to be in the armory is a bad idea
like, say, with old shadowlings, despite all their problems you could contribute no matter what - replacing lights, handing out portable light sources, etc. etc.
What about monstrosities will be fun for those who don't roll as one/a sec officer/maybe science if they can make guns?

Sure, you can limit the gamemode to a certain player count, but that doesn't work all the time - I've seen ~30 player games on sybil with little/no sec presence, and it's not uncommon
Obviously in a "this thing needs to die" mode guns will be best, but I think it's important to consider what will happen if good gear is obnoxiously difficult/impossible to obtain

The intent here is kind of that a monstrosity is something a couple prepared assistants can take on, but not something a single person can. Kind of like an alien queen if it didn't have facehuggers or a number of instant stuns.

RNG is the cause of a lot of rounds ending abruptly already when antags play a bit nicer, I'm not sure what's to be gained by adding yet another "time to reroll!" forcing event in the face of many people saying they would like more interesting, indepth, longer rounds.

Personally I like the idea of an antagonist that forces players to run and hide instead of charge in guns blazing or killing with a bar of soap or a banana peel to prove they're the most robust. Having to use shadows to sneak by, barricading departments, or jumping in a locker and praying they don't check it could be pretty intense. Problem is that all falls apart once it's time for the shuttle since everyone just becomes easy pickings as they herd onto the shuttle or jam themselves in escape pods.XDTM wrote:On the other hand i wouldn't mind an antag you have to avoid/leave to professionals rather than run off to confront with a spear. Like, slaughter demons have super huge mobility, full heals, and are really, really hard to get rid of without lethal shotguns or similarly powerful weapons.
These should be a lot easier to get rid of than slaughter demons, and the only point at which these should be stronger/more dangerous than slaughter demons is if they've consumed at least 16 people and 3 other monstrosities.
