I always get a sinking feeling when I see that a dispenser has been removed, regardless of which job I'm doing. I guess it counts as a peeve since I'm posting here.

I appreciate that it can be frustrating if no one is around to dole out mutagen, or they're busy, or they're new and agonise about handing out hazardous chemicals before eventually making you thirty units. The good news is that with an understanding of the basic foundations of spess botany you don't need mutagen to get things rolling these days.
First off, you will need to unlock your vendors and start some glowshrooms growing. Improving the yield is desirable since R&D will most likely want a couple in due course, but either way you should start them early given their lengthy maturation time.
Examine a bottle of Left4Zed and you will learn that it "causes significant mutations in plants". It does so at the point of harvest, so set three packs of pumpkin seeds to Production Speed 1 and plant them in Left4Zed. Numerous plants offer this trait, such as wheat or potatoes. Don't bother with changing anything else.
There are lots of things you could be doing in the short time it should take to yield results; most labs benefit from some careful rearranging of their trays, optimised melons will keep you in food, biomass and emergency compost, buffing the yield of replica pod seeds will let you start stockpiling them in case cloning goes down, and so forth. Once you get blumpkin and glowshroom seeds the rest should be self explanatory.
If a chemist served you quickly and you got a lucky mutation right off the bat, then you might produce mutagen blumpkins a bit faster than if you follow this method. But averaged over a number of rounds this will give you more dependable success.

Let's say you've decided to breed toxin-consuming transparent light-emitting kudzu, and you need a good supply of phenol and sterilizine. Why not ask the science department to make you a portable dispenser in exchange for the plants you should be developing for them?

One chemist can quickly deplete a dispenser over the course of stocking up medbay, so having the other sitting mostly idle in another department can impair the station. And that's without considering the probability that another chemist will arrive.
While it is to be hoped that a redundant chemist would not share the lack of concern for others demonstrated by a kleptomaniac pseudo-botanist, they might feel the need to express their frustrations without giving due consideration to any other current or potential users of the Hydroponics lab. Heaven forbid that they

• Take two large beakers.
• Make 100 units of fluorosulphuric acid in beaker 1, decant 25 units into beaker 2, then top up beaker 1 with water.
• Make 25 units of fluorosurfactant in beaker 2, then top it up with sulphuric acid.
  because the ensuing foam would destroy any and all hydroponic trays that it touched, along with the plants contained within.

It is a fact that Hydroponics takes time to blossom into its full glory, and that you will often find yourself denied this opportunity by a fourth consecutive engine containment failure. The only time I think I would consider asking for a chemistry dispenser would be when there was a critical threat to the station that necessitated the swift production and dissemination of explosives, such as a declaration of war from nuke ops or rampant ragin' mages.

I hope that botanists will come to take pride in their knowledge of the potential of the tools designated to them, and demonstrate the patience that their craft has traditionally required. Then the notion of a chemist returning from setting up cryo to find their lab vandalised might be consigned to the past.

This is part of the reason I kinda like the new(er) medchems. If you're making the fancy high-end stuff, they're literally only useful if the patient is already in super bad shape and their OD punishments are fairly severe. So when the dickass assistant runs up with 10 brute and eats the whole fridge of silicyclic acid patches I get to go back to carpeting the lab while he dies outside my window.

- Can be scaled up or down. Possibility of an outer ring of maintenance as well, and/or additional maintenance passages around the squares.

Glad someone else understands what I'm saying - you have a right to say what you like, and I have a right to say "you're being a douchebag for no discernible reason". There's nothing wrong with swearing or insults, but when your shtick is "I'm going to call people names all round until I die and tell them to drink bleach" you're not contributing to the game in any way, shape or form. I would hold that opinion regardless if the player was specifically talking to me or anyone else - it's a shitty attitude to have and I'm posting it in the pet peeves thread because it bothers me.

I don't know where the idea that I should respect people choosing to do things that don't break the rules but are shitty anyways came from, honestly.
