Yeah, combat can be a little rough and oh fucking christ alive the massive item bloat. By the end of the game you are swimming in omni gel because you have to break down all the SUPER WIN BULLET II SUPER WIN BULLET III POISON PULLET IV ad fucking naseum upgrades. Glad they cut it back in 2, but in my opinion they cut it back too much. 3 hit a nice medium for item and gun variety without it being too bloated

One of my biggest complaints about ME1 was the weapon balance. Looking past the fact that they all functioned exactly the same and all had the same models, they all ended up being pointless once you realized spectre weapons are better in every single way and are sold in a shop you have access to near the beginning of the game. Yeah they were pricey as fuck, but you could afford em pretty easily just by selling all the weapons you picked up along the way. IIRC last time I played I had spectre weapons after beating the Thorian mission and doing some side quests. Kind of why I liked what they did with the weapons in ME2 and 3 where each weapon functions differently and serves its own purpose rather than just having a fuck ton of interchangeable weapons followed by fuck everything endgame weapons.

Yeah it was a huge step up making the guns all unique, but in ME2 there was just too few of them. I think the base game had a weapon you started with for each type and then one other weapon of that type acquired somewhere in the game. DLC added a few but it was still pretty sparse. ME3 hit the sweet spot for lots of guns that were mostly unique or had their own little quirks to them. I remember fucking loving the burstfire assault rifle you get on Omega in ME2, it was a fucking sexy headshot machine. But then in 3 they nerfed the damage and increased the recoil big time which made it pretty garbage

it's a great game and a great FF too.

Playing the CC on PSP, so after this I have the "interlude" game and then FFIV the after years.

You don't outclimb anyone in a british fighter friend.
British Fighters are really good at turn fighting, but if you go up high and try and BnZ you're in 109 territory and the 109's don't take kindly to people messing around in their high altitudes. Don't get into the trap of trying to turn fight biplanes either, you will never win, especially if it's a Chaika. Get speed, try and clip it when you pass, if you don't, disengange and try again, don't get into a turning battle with one, you'll find yourself in their sights after a while. On the other hand if you do get a hit, one shot is usually enough to take them out.

If you are having problems taking down a 109 at high alt in a spitfire you are doing something wrong. Spits have better turning and perform better at high altitudes. Hieght advantage is everything. If a 109 is bearing down on you, evade. Never turn into their line of fire and play chicken. Spits were made to dog, so get on his tail. Get higher than they are before engaging.
Typhoons are interceptors, and boom and zoom. Intercept bombers and high altitude fighters with them, they work better up there, they climb faster. Learn how to climb without having to point your nose up and gun the engine.

It won't ever be because of how airplanes are specialised much more than tanks

Any tank can go do the objective, and any tank can shoot at other tanks

A fighter airplane without bombs, what most people play, has no chance at taking out bridges or tanks, and doesn't bring enough ammo to take out a large amount of soft targets. That's what bombers are for

And most people want to play fighters, thus not being able to do the objective

A big reason why player bombers are easy to take down is because they are alone or with a small enough amount that their gunners aren't really doing that. And if there are enough players to make such a formation, your team will be lacking in fighters because you have so many bombers

There are a few maps with AI recon planes, and a few AI bombers. Nobody cares about them though, they're more of an 'if you happen to be near here you may as well shoot it down'
Barely any reward and they don't actually do that much to be worth the effort

And even then bombers were getting shot down left right and centre without a CAP covering them .

Got around to playing Alpha Centauri finally. It's been like 15 years?

I used to play it a lot, but I could never get the expansion to work for me. But now that The GOG version updated with Alien Crossfire, I can finally play it.

The atmosphere and writing is still top fucking notch, and playing the expansion for the first time means there is a lot I haven't seen before.

Playing as the Cyborgs, and they're a pretty good tech faction, too. Just a bit slower than the university since they don't get free Network Nodes, but they get to steal technologies easy instead of having them stolen all the time like the university.

I bought the game legit too late to get a steam key for it, so while i do own it i need to go get a full new download each time a new version comes out and do all my mods manually rather than with steam workshop. I know Tynan was pretty upfront about not being able to give out more keys but it still fucking sucks

Don't be ridiculous. Evolve was a scam, this is a niche title for very small audience. These games always have huge mark up and their prices never go down. Just go to matrixgames and look around.

Every time someone posts a link for a ridiculously priced game I press the link knowing full well I'll be met with a slitherine studios game. Their prices will never go down. They've priced their games like this for decades and people still buy them so what can I say it must work out. Distant worlds was like 200 bucks for the full version before they released universe and even then the price is steep.

15 years and I still know how to play this game.

Playing on Librarian difficulty, and it's good. Still holds up to any modern 4X game imo

I united the human factions against the xeno threat (Who was lucky enough to spawn on his own continent alone). Currently leading in tech, but the xenos lead in almost everything else.

Maybe I should play some Civ 4 after this while I'm on my nostalgia trip

The only ones that should are the former Cult sea bases in the middle, and probably the monoliths as well. But given how religiously the different factions follow their ideologies, they all kind of look like monolithic symbols of power. Morgan (Yellow) bases are supposed to be Corporate offices literally covered in gold, and the Spartan (black) ones look like something you'd do a military rally at.

Personally I think my Cyborg bases (Teal) look more utilitarian.

Alpha Centauri works around doomstacks by having units on the same space take collateral damage when one of them is destroyed.

Why don't they do this any more? It's more fun than the annoying 1UPT Civ 5 uses.

Playing some Divinity Original Sin. Fire and earth spells are the best combo. There's something incredibly satisfying about turning almost every battle into a raging inferno and then cleaning it all up with a rain spell afterwards.

Found out the hard way in Divinity OS that grenades aren't 100% accurate like special arrows and spells.

One of the things I miss most about Alpha Centauri that Civ doesn't have: Terraforming

I've never had such a bizarre game before.

Started as the Pirates, decided to try and peacefully jew my way to a economic victory, but my neighbor just had to be the fucking ecoterrorists.

We stayed out oh each other's way for a while because my faction was 90% ocean-based, so I occupied the archipelago just to the south of the main island. Then one day she detonated a Planet Buster right over my headquarters, essentially crippling my economy for a good few years.

And through a combination of a WWIII scenario on Planet, global warming caused by my jewery, and my intentional melting of the polar ice caps to flood the planet (Who needs land anyways?) the world is now +80% ocean and climbing.

I've lost 3 headquarters full of secret projects to angry natives and enemy planet busters. I'm now covered by a wall of orbital defenses and everything around my island has been completely vapourized and I'm nuking anyone that dares to build in range.

Despite being ground zero for planet buster shenanigans I'm still leading in tech, population and wealth. I don't have a military because it's mostly just planet busters. The pirates specialize in naval combat, and the only way they can get close enough to fight me without building another obvious target for me is to send ships. Being pirates, I can have my men board their ships and seize control.

Playing on the second highest difficulty.

Well civ 2 had terraforming, taking it away in latter titles was a big step backward.

Edit: SHeesh why is discord the new chat room of choice I simply choose to leave the room like you know on the assumption their app has some sort of connection history to rejoin through and its just a log off for the night. Neither of these things are true plus invites to it go stale for some daft reason.
